Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this riff on the familiar poem by C. Clement Moore, a teacher named Jane, with fifty years experience, muses as to whether she had a positive impact on her student's lives. The next twelve days demonstrate that she was indeed an influential force. Jill on the first day announces that she became a horticulturalist after tending bulbs in the classroom, as well as a pear tree. Tanya on the fourth day pursued a career in communications and is working for peace at the UN. On the tenth day, our teacher receives a call on her cell phone from a student who said that he was playing in her hometown--William it seems is a big NBA star. It ends on a happy note--Jane is glad she was a factor in so many lives and also is delighted that she learned from her many students. A nice stocking stuffer for any teacher or college student preparing to enter the field of education. 2005, Running Press, Ages Adult.
—Marilyn Courtot

Read an Excerpt

On the 1st day of Christmas,
Jane sat reflectively,
A teacher who for fifty years had taught devotedly.

So willingly she'd labored, but this Christmas night asked she,
"I'd like this question answered:
Did my students learn from me?"

Right then she heard the doorbell and standing on the step,
Was Jill, whom she remembered was always so adept

At planting seeds and caring for the bulbs her class watched grow,
And while tending to the pear tree,
her little face would glow!

"I came to thank my teacher for the things she taught to me.
Now I teach Horticulture and Plant Biology."
