Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
These thirty deliciously frightful tales from countries around the world are short and easy to remember. At three to six pages each, children and teens will shudder in delight as they share them with their friends. There is a story from El Salvador about a man who discovers that his wife turns into a witch every night, and a tale from the British Isles about a man who is warned about "Crooker," but no one will tell him who that is. There are cautionary tales, tales with dire consequences, a couple of urban legends and even an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story of "The Mother and Death." Readers who are familiar with San Souci's other "Short & Shivery" books will not be disappointed here. Source notes in the back of the book are helpful for storytellers and authenticate the tales. 2000 (orig. 1998), Delacorte Press, $14.95 and $10.95. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo

Gr 5-9-Fans of San Souci's previous "Short and Shivery" titles (Delacorte) and newcomers alike will welcome this latest sampling of spooky tales. Drawing on urban legends, myths, folktales, and ghost stories from around the world and across time, the reteller serves up 30 tales of the supernatural that range from eerie to downright scary. Readers are sure to shiver to stories of a pair of ghostly, hairy hands that haunt a lonely British roadway; the strange vengeance of a beautiful Chinese bride; and the horror of the Australian Yara-ma-yha-who, red-eyed creatures with octopus fingers who eat foolish hunters and careless children. Suspenseful, accessible, and energetic, the tales are uniformly brief and gripping, making them ideal for reluctant readers. Intriguing source notes expand on the lore behind each selection and comment on historical and regional influences, adding dimension and satisfying the curiosity of discerning readers. San Souci continues to blend quality and high-entertainment value in this chilling feast for the imagination.-Jennifer A. Fakolt, Denver Public Library
