A TEXTBOOK OF METALLURGICAL KINETICS
Mechanical kinetics constitutes one of the basic subjects of metallurgical engineering. This presents the kinetics of metallurgical processes in a compressive fashion.Organised into 14 chapters, the book begins with an introduction to the basic concepts. It then discusses the kinetics of homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reactions with some real-life examples from the metallurgical field. The book also covers diffusion, convective mass transfer and mixing in fluids, and mass transfer in fluids adjacent to a solid surface.Several important processes in metallurgical and materials engineering involve reactions of porous solids with gases. The book discusses this with the help of two important reactions - reduction of iron ores and gasification of carbon. It also deals with mass transfer among two fields and presents the kinetics of electrochemical reactions and phase transformation. The book also contains numerical worked-out examples and problems. The appendix provides important data useful for solving problems in kinetics.

About the Author

GHOSH, AHINDRA AHINDRA GHOSH, holder of a Doctorate of Science (ScD) degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, is one of India’s most renowned academicians in the area of Process Metallurgy. He had been engaged in teaching thermodynamics, kinetics and transport phenomena, with specific research emphasis on application of these areas to ironmaking and steelmaking, for almost four decades at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He also interacted with steel plants extensively, and is continuing to do so even after retirement.Professor Ghosh during his academic career guided many research students and scholars. He has to his credit five books and ninety original research publications in reviewed journals. GHOSH, SUDIPTO SUDIPTO GHOSH, PhD (IIT Kanpur), is Associate Professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Formerly, he worked as scientist at Tata Research Development and Design Centre, Pune. His research interests include computational material science applied to material processing, deformation behaviour and performance of lithium ion batteries. He has taught courses on thermo-dynamics, transport phenomena, composite materials, computational material science and physics of materials. Dr. Ghosh has published more than 25 papers in various reputed national and international journals.
