Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Amanda and her family have always celebrated Thanksgiving with her grandmother, Bubbe: "Even more than Chanukah or Passover... Thanksgiving had always been Bubbe's special holiday." Bubbe begins preparing the extravagant meal weeks in advance, and all year long saves wishbones so there are enough for each of the grandchildren. When Bubbe dies, Amanda can't imagine how she'll ever stop missing her. Fortunately, Amanda's mother finds a way to recreate the annual feast in Bubbe's honor--right down to the wishbone. Although the narrative gets off to a strong start, the transition that relates Bubbe's death is jarring ("And so for the first Thanksgiving without Bubbe... "), and soon thereafter takes on the feel of a memoir with one too many anecdotes. Thompson's (O Jerusalem) paintings are strongest when focused on Amanda and her grandmother; the rest are surprisingly static. Ages 6-up. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature - Jan Lieberman
The size of the wishbone determines which wish Amanda will make when she and her grandmother Bubbe share them after Thanksgiving dinner. Bubbe not only began preparing for the holiday early in November, but she would save wishbones from other birds during the year. The year Bubbe died, no one thought about wishbones or cooking ahead, yet they expected the meal to be just like Bubbe's. Quick! Get out Bubbe's recipes. Everyone pitch in! Just when they think all will be well, the fuses blow. Bubbe may have the last word! The turkey hasn't begun to cook. What will they do? Neighbors come to the rescue in Michael Rosen's touching and joyous story. Thompson's paintings in glorious color evoke family love and traditions. Share this during any holiday season!

    Thanksgiving Wish

We read Thanksgiving Wish in speech at school. Afterwards, we wrote this review together. It is a story about a girl named Amanda at Thanksgiving time. Amanda's grandma, Bubbe, lives in a small town. Every year Bubbe has a Thanksgiving feast at her house. Bubbe keeps wishbones all year long for her grandchildren. One Thanksgiving, Bubbe was not there and her family had the feast without her. The power went out. If you want to know what happened to Bubbe and how they cooked dinner on Thanksgiving, read this book.
