Children's Literature
This simple, yet elegant picture book tells the story of a poor farmer, his wife and six children who receive the opportunity to make a special wish. Although the wish brings the family six years of riches, the farmer's family shares its wealth with other less fortunate members of the community. When the six years pass, the family must return its gift. The question remains¾what do they have to return since they have given all of their wealth away? The answer, along with the rest of this book, describes the powerful nature of generosity and charity. Its strong message is important for all young people to learn. 2000, Hachai Publishing, $9.95. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer:Rebecca Joseph

K-Gr 3-A nice retelling of a familiar tale of kindness and community. Shollar bases her picture book on a Midrash from the Yalkut Shimoni. Avraham and Esther are poor but pious, struggling to put food on the table for their young sons. When a mysterious old man gives Avraham a choice between the blessing of six years of wealth now, or six years of wealth in old age, the man takes the question to his wife. Esther, as wise as her namesake, chooses to take the wealth immediately, and begins a thread of kindness and charity, which reaches throughout their community. They buy shoes for a barefoot child, purchase a chuppah for a bride's wedding day, and give money to help a mother afford her son's bar mitzvah. At the end of the six years, the old man returns to reclaim the treasure, but of course the riches remain with Avraham's family, and "the thread of kindness stretches on to this very day." Mekibel's watercolors lend a dreamy cast to the illustrations, as if they are memories of long ago. A solid addition to Jewish folklore collections.-Martha Link, Louisville Free Public Library, KY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
In A Thread Of Kindness: A Tzedaka Story, Leah Shollar tells the Midrash story of a once wealthy man who became poor. Forced to work the fields for his bread, he worries that he may not be able to feed his family. His wife encourages him to trust in Hashem, and all will be well. When a mysterious visitor meets him in the field one day and offers him six years of riches, he asks his clever wife what to do. Her advice (and her subsequent example of using the riches for many good deeds) makes those six years last a lifetime. Shoshana Mekibel's wonderful illustrations enhanced this truly splendid and thoroughly charming story for young readers ages 3 to 7.
