Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This outstanding addition to the great collection of "I Spy" books aims to teach young readers about the alphabet letters from A to Z. The wonderful and appealing book meets that challenge and offers preschool children opportunities to enjoy developmentally-appropriate text. It is purposely written and illustrated to entertain, engage, teach, and challenge each young reader at his or her reading level, and the text demonstrates an understanding of the sequential development of skills when learning to read. From the very first glossy, brightly-colored photograph, the focus of each and every detailed photograph is a specific letter of the alphabet and the sound that letter makes in words. However, before letter and sound recognition can occur children must be able to use picture clues in text, recognize repetition, and identify rhyming patterns in auditory language. Therefore, each page of this book has a repetitive pattern of text, written in rhyme, and these require the reader to use the detailed picture clues to respond. As young readers become comfortable with repetitive text, rhyming, and searching for picture clues, they will be able to dig deeper into the meaning of the text and identify each letter by sight and sound. The challenge is great for young readers, and this differentiated instructional approach enables children to read with success and pure enjoyment! Reviewer: Susan Borges
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2–A comparison of this book to earlier “I Spy” publications shows that virtually every illustration in it appeared in those titles. One redeeming quality is the new text and a nod to phonics. An introduction for parents and teachers includes suggestions on how to use the book to help children learn to read. Marzollo’s familiar rhymes feature consistent phonetic sounds for letters that have more than one. For example, the “c” page colors in red only the instances in which “c” sounds like a “k.” The hidden items in the colorful photos, full of kid-friendly objects, are easy to locate. This is for a slightly younger audience than the previous books in the series, but those children might be better served by Roxie Munro’s Mazeways (Sterling, 2007).–Debbie Whitbeck, West Ottawa Public Schools, Holland, MI

    Great book!

As with other I Spy books in the series, great pictures. I wanted a book to use with younger students so that we could get in some extra letter practice in a motivating book.

    Great book for young kids

I loved sharing this book with both of my children, we found different ways to read and share with this book. It has rhyming words and teaches kids to look closely for hidden objects and helps with memory and detail. It was always one of our favorites, so I purchased it as a gift for a younger child/friend for Christmas - he was thrilled with it - and so was his Mom!

My son is amazed with this book!

My son is 15 months old, so a little young for the original series of I Spy books like this one. We usually buy him the I Spy "Little" books. But since we have them all already, we looked through all of these larger I Spy for older kids and found that this is the only one at the store of many that had pictures rather than just works to tell kids what to search for. This allowed him to do the older version. He absolutely loves it, especially after mastering the little series.
