Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The latest in a series of science biographies written for the high school and undergraduate market, this title includes 152 biographies of chemists, including 23 women. Edited by Oakes (Encyclopedia of World Scientists; International Encyclopedia of Women Scientists), the entries run between 750 and 1200 words (one to one and one-half pages apiece). They all begin with a summary of the subject's major contribution, followed by a chronological biography of their personal and professional life. Appendixes list the birthplace and country of activity of the chemists as well as a chart of their life spans. In order to make the work accessible, the text is nonscientific and omits chemical formulae and reaction schemes. Approximately 40 percent of the biographies include a black-and-white portrait, and some include cross references to related scientists. Other titles in the series cover computer scientists, geologists, and scientists involved in "science, technology and society"; additional volumes are planned for biology and physics, and all are priced at $45. Comparable works include Oxford's two-volume Biographical Dictionary of Scientists, 3d ed., which has 1280 entries ($125), and Gale's five-volume Notable Scientists, 2d ed. ($375), with 1600 entries. This title (and the others already published) can serve as a good substitute for the larger compilations, especially for public, high school, and undergraduate libraries only wanting to purchase selective subjects.-Wade M. Lee, Univ. of Toledo Libs. Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
From The Critics
Written for students of high school reading level or above, this text profiles 150 chemists, focusing on their professional careers and achievements, but including some information on family and educational background. The scientists profiled were active between 1700 and the present. Famous personalities such as Alfred Nobel, Antoine Lavoisier, George Washington Carver, and Marie Curie are included alongside lesser-known scientists. Appendixes allow readers to locate scientists by country of activity, country of birth, and year of birth. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
