Overview

A collection of Yiddish cartoons published early in the 20th century, with transliterations and translations, glossaries and grammar helps, plus and introduction for "non-mavens" and a foreward by the Chairman of YIVO, the institute for Jewish Research.

By the early Twentieth Century Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, who had been coming to our shores since 1880, had established their language and culture as a distinctive part of the American scene. Dr. Albert Small, international cartoon expert, brings this era back to life in the drawings and humor of comic artists of the day.

Editorial Reviews

Der Bay
This is a delightful book which has a good vocabulary on each page, and at the end-- plus a short grammar. It is really recommended for general reading and club meetings. -The Golden Gate to the World-Wide Yiddish Community
Rabbi Jack Riemer
It was a precious period in American and in Jewish history --those immigrant days....but it is a period worth remembering, and this book is a memento of those days now gone. -Jewish Journal
