Big Eye's Tribute to Bruce Springsteen is more ambitious than most of the label's cookie cutter pop tribute albums. It features a sobering reading of "Born in the USA" by Uillean piper Eric Rigler, for example, and Little Milton's contemporary blues rendition of "I'm on Fire" is pretty interesting. But it takes more than rearrangement to make an album of covers succeed, and Tribute to Bruce Springsteen seems to run out of steam somewhere around Teddy Zig-Zag's confusing swamp grass version of "57 Channels [And Nothin' On]." That Teddy is prominently referred to as a member of Guns N' Roses only further maligns this collection. Such name-dropping seems designed to strengthen some of the participants' rather flimsy credentials -- to hide the set's weak spots behind name drops. The tribute will be of interest to Springsteen completists, especially Rigler's work. But it doesn't have much resonance for the casual fan.
