Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
"Noooo!" Little Bill yells when Alice the Great states she is taking him to the hospital. Even though he hurt his arm playing cowboy, Little Bill is afraid to go to the hospital, especially without his mother. Alice the Great assures him that his Mama will meet them at the hospital. Little Bill is consoled when Mama shows up and provides further reassurance that both she and the doctor only want to help him feel better. After the cast is put on Little Bill's broken arm, he begins to understand that hospitals are places where people are helped to feel better. He decides that he wants to be both a cowboy and a doctor when he grows up. The colorful illustrations in this book will help familiarize young readers with various hospital procedures and medical equipment. In addition, the diversity of the characters provides an inspiration for racial acceptance and harmony. The book is based on the TV series Little Bill created by Bill Cosby, as seen on Nick Jr. 2001, Simon Spotlight/Simon & Schuster, $3.50. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Denise Daley
