Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanna E. Henshon
In the latest edition to this popular and ever-expanding series, Babymouse cannot wait for Christmas so she can receive a Whizbang. Babymouse writes a letter to Santa, sits on his lap several times, and wishes with all her might for a Whizbang. The Whizbang plays videogames, texts, solves mathematical problems, sees into the future, folds laundry, and does homework. At school, Babymouse waits for her Secret Santa to bring the Whizbang. She goes all out to win the Holiday Locker Decorating Contest. After school, Babymouse attends "The Nutcracker" ballet with a friend. Instead of getting a Whizbang, Babymouse receives whisker conditioner from her Secret Santa. And she does not get a Whizbang for Hanukkah, either. But Babymouse has a vivid dream that is reminiscent of the famous classic, A Christmas Carol. Babymouse realizes Christmas is not about presents; it is about family, friendship, and love. On Christmas morning, Babymouse finally receives a Whizbang from Santa. Babymouse learns a valuable lesson about the love and joy of the holiday season. In this fun and humorous book, young readers will follow Babymouse through an exciting adventure. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.

Gr 1–4—Babymouse decorates her locker for Christmas, imagines herself in scenarios ranging from "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" (in which a mouse is indeed stirring) to "A Christmas Carol" (in which Babymouse meets the scary Ghost of Mean Girls Past), and obsesses over getting a Whiz Bang, a mobile device that does everything but straighten whiskers. Somehow, she makes it to Christmas in one piece, when she discovers that unexpected presents can be the best ones. Both fans and readers new to the series will linger to read Babymouse's pink-saturated Yuletide adventures cover to cover.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library

Meet the Author

Brother-and-sister team MATTHEW HOLM and JENNIFER L. HOLM have been extremely good this year. If you're reading, Santa, Jennifer would love to find a surfboard under her tree and Matthew is still waiting for the Star Wars AT-AT walker he asked for when he was 10. When they're not busy decking halls, Jennifer writes novels, including three Newbery Honor winners, Our Only May Amelia, Penny From Heaven, and Turtle in Paradise. Matthew Holm is a graphic designer and freelance writer. They are also the creators of the Squish series (which we think Rudolph would really enjoy).

Babymouse Wants a Whiz Bang for Christmas!

This holiday season, our beloved mouse is eager to get the hot new does-it-all phone, a Wizbang, which already the Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm give a nod to the adults and mock our desire for the latest, greatest tech products. Babymouse tries to con Santa with various disguises and gets taken back to the Ghosts of Mean Girls Past as she, hopefully, learns a lesson. Will there be a "typical" ending for her? Read A Very Babymouse Christmas, and then do someone a favor and give them a copy. Babymouse is charming even when she's being bratty and self-centered, in a cute mouse kind of way. One of the best in the series. Appropriate for children, though a few jokes may be over their heads but they will still totally enjoy Babymouse's adventures and the lesson to be grateful for what you do have (and to give as well as receive at holiday time).
