A Very British Crossing of the USAby Clive Randall

Middle age calls for an adventure. Not an earth shattering adventure, but something a 40 year old father of two can handle. Drive around the United States in a 1948 open top tourer, for more than 9000 miles? It turned out to be a lot harder than it seemed....What is this book about?
This book is about a pretty ordinary person having an adventure. Not an adventure involving magic, spies, battling against overwhelming odds or any of the truly heroic stuff. This is more the kind of adventure a not very brave, not very talented, 40 year old father of two would have. Like all good Hollywood films, it does weave in a few other interests to boost the ratings, including an old sport car, danger, some love interest on the side (not involving me!) and a lot of luck. Plus of course there is a lot about the people of the United States of America and many of its major tourist attractions, ranging from the cowboys of Dodge City to the natural splendour of Yellowstone to the re-creation of Williamsburg. But when it boils down to it, this book is about challenging stereotypes. Stereotypes of America, old cars, people and relationships and about provoking the reader into thinking about whether they too want an adventure - before time slows us down.
