Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
This very readable picture book provides an excellent snapshot of life in a pioneer community. Detailed, realistic illustrations from a variety of artists offer numerous views of children and adults in everyday life. Illustrations of children demonstrate differences between the lives of those children and modern readers, such as children working with a mortar and pestle to make cornmeal; illustrations also demonstrate similarities between older and modern times, such as children playing with toys. Text and illustration offer information about different groups, such as the Powhatan, the Haundenosaunee, the Anishinabe, and the Navajo. The book would work particularly well in a classroom for students of different reading abilities. Each page includes a longer description that would work well for more experienced readers, as well as several captions for illustrations that are understandable for less developed readers. The book also includes a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. It would be even stronger with suggestions for additional study, particularly Internet resources that are so appealing to the intended readers. Reviewer: Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
