Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
Daniela takes a walk with her Grandpa and they play a word game. They go back and forth expressing how much they mean to each other by using phrases like "you are my sunshine…you are my earth…" A touching story about the bond between grandparent and grandchild that not only demonstrates that a bond can be reinforced through an activity as simple as a stroll but it also teaches the concept of opposites. To her grandpa's "you are my question." Daniela replies "you are my answer," a pattern of wordplay that continues to the end of the story. The illustrator's use of soft colors in the serene nature scenes enhances the warm feelings the author evokes with her loving exchange between granddaughter and grandfather. Whether the reader is the child or the child's parent they will certainly be reminded of their own grandparent and all of the simple moments shared that were anything but. Reviewer: Mandy Cruz

K-Gr 3–As Daniela and her grandfather take a walk in the woods, they play a poetic word game that shows how much they mean to one another. First, the author creates a dialogue between the characters using opposite meanings: “You are my question,” “You are my answer.” On the way back, after they stop to contemplate a tranquil river, they start the game over using synonymous words and thoughts: “You are my hope,” “You are my wish.” The visual narration begins with an inviting road that takes readers to a world of amazing trees, green prairies, a circle of mushrooms, exotic animals, and calm waters. The richness of the pastel colors is perfectly combined with a creative and tender word game that makes the story significant for a wide audience. The translation flows like a song in both languages.–Irania Macías Patterson, Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, NC
