Overview

Frederick is a demon. Born in Maryland in the early 1980's, he hasn't a clue where he came from or why, but feels an irresistible desire to occupy a human body. Once inside, he finds the previous occupants' consciousness and memories forever erased, an inevitable side effect that gives Frederick pause when switching bodies, but not so much as to truly halt his ongoing enjoyment of human lives. In various bodies, he travels the world for decades--aimless--sampling cultures and experiencing life from the points of view of males, females, young, old, rich, poor.

Now, Frederick has an urge to return to his roots in America, explore the mystery of his origin, find someone to love, and settle down for a while. In his hometown, his mission bears fruit much faster than he expected, as person after person presents themselves, and following his impulses, he is lead directly to love, tragedy, answers, and the humanity he never knew he wanted.

Once again Michael Siemsen has forced his reader to think outside the box and leave the comfort zone of the traditional story line.  But this time he is not jumping across time and dancing us through history with wonderful discoveries of archaeological finds while leading us on wild rides through hair raising adventures.
This time Michael has delved into a new genre and dared us to look at who a demon is, in a different light.  Just how long can you hold out hating this guy?  And just who is he?  Is he a fallen being from another dimension that has found himself trapped in our time and space and having to contend with what is here?  But then... Michael has never been one for staying inside the lines.  That's why I enjoy reading his novels so much.  I never know where the turn of the next page is going to take me.  What twist in the narrative he has plotted to throw me for a loop and send me back a few pages to rethink my misconceptions of his character.  I LOVE IT.
Michael is a writer for the thinker, a lover of mysteries (more ways than one), and has a wonderful way of weaving his story so that you can't put down the book till the last page has been turned... with full plans to pick it up and re-read it and figure out how you missed the clues.

Michael was kind enough to ask me to be a beta reader. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is unlike his other novels but it showcases that he is multi-faceted in his writing and not a 'one trick pony'. If Michael wrote it, it is worth your time. Kudos!

If you have read Michael Siemsen's other books, know that this one is completely different. It's about a demon named Frederick. It's not scary, but maybe just a little creepy. But, Frederick is not the bad guy; far from it. I know what you are thinking: how can that be? he's a demon for Pete's sake! Just read the book and then tell me I'm wrong. Message me and then tell me that you don't think that Frederick is an awesome demon and that you wish you could read more about his history and future. I don't know what Mr. Siemsen has planned for Frederick, but I can't wait to find out what it is. I will be patiently waiting (ok, maybe not patiently!).

    Deeply moved.
I have completed reading A Warm Place... for the second time and enjoyed it in an entirely different way than the first. The first read earns you the surprise of the twists, the enjoyment of the characters, the surface story. Now upon a second pass, knowing how it all turns out, there are details and clues strewn throughout the book, from the very beginning, only now illuminated, as if receiving a wink from an author now that we were in the same place.

But beyond that, this is a moving story, and all-too-real. The characters, Frederick...an unknowingly insecure free-wheeling sex-addict. Melanie, a heartbreaking self-aware soul just looking for an inkling of happiness. James, a fear-filled control-freak with his own demons. It is these very real people that make the book and keep you from ever having to suspend disbelief.

In retrospect, this novel may be the tale of a demon, but this is only a mask atop the reality of self-discovery and buried sadness, a shield perhaps used by the author telling his own story of anguish, because truly its a tale of broken people overcoming, just finding a warm place to call home.

Another great book from Michael Siemsen!  Yet another book I have read by him that is not of my typical genre, yet I couldn't put it down. I'm officially a fan!

As many of you know who have read my other reviews, I'm a big fan of Michael's earlier books The Dig and The Opal. Interesting characters, unusual situations, great storytelling - this is what I've come to expect from Michael. I'm always a little nervous when an author changes direction, but I shouldn't have been in this case. A Warm Place to Call Home was as good a read as the others with engaging characters, interesting settings, plot twists galore and a very satisfying ending. Highly recommended!

A fun romp with a different kind of Demon.
Not my favorite Michael Siemsen tale, but still well worth your time.
This is not your average fictional demon.
Good story with some unexpected plot twists.
Not scary at all, unless you contemplate the consequences of having demons in the world with these particular characteristics.
