Library Journal
Wife, mother, daughter, editor--which of these so overwhelmed Niles that she fled the pressures of New York City for a month with her parents in Provence? This work, in which Niles recounts her ``sabbatical'' month off, is a rather whining, pretentious effort littered with Miss Piggy-like ``Frenchisms'' and an occasional ``Italianism.'' Niles rarely mixes with the locals, ostensibly because the locals don't mix. A few of the sights, sounds, and smells of Provence do filter through in spite of the florid prose. Readers looking for the real flavor of Provence should try Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence ( LJ 4/1/90)--a short, funny, warm tale of a family's attempt to renovate an old farmhouse. Not recommended.-- Paula M. Zieselman, Debevoise & Plimpton, New York
