A Winter Garden: Five Songs For The Seasonby Loreena McKennitt
This Christmas EP (or, more accurately, "Winter Holiday" EP) features lushly produced folk renditions of seasonal traditionals and McKennitt originals. Like all of McKennitt's material, these songs gorgeously blend folk traditions from around the world (with an emphasis on the Irish and Scottish), seasoned with a sizable dose of literate universalist mysticism, and undistractingly garnished with a shimmering, glossy modern pop polish.

McKennitt combines her ethereal voice with instruments both traditional and unexpected to offer unique renditions of seasonal carols. Three selections--¿Coventry Carol¿, ¿Snow,¿ and ¿Seeds of Love¿--are gently offered, with harp, whistle and pipes accompanying Loreena¿s clear, heartfelt singing. But ¿God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman¿ takes a delightful Middle Eastern turn with doumbeks and other exotic percussion, while ¿Good King Wenceslas¿ takes it a step further, adding a wailing violin taksim over its driving beat. About these two numbers, I¿m tempted to say something like ¿Christmas was never like this!¿, but considering where the celebrated events occurred, it probably was. This is a short CD--only about 22 minutes--but worth having for anyone who enjoys Loreena McKennitt¿s ever-widening creative range.
A total "mood music" CD. Just picture yourself sitting in the rocky mountains watching the snow fall, sipping a glass of wine in front of a gentle fire, and letting Loreena weave her magic! Wow, only 5 songs, yet one of of the albums I would want on a deserted island!!! My favorite is "Sow the Seeds of Love".
Loreena's EP ''A Winter Garden'', may not be a full length album, but it is indeed a winter treat worth having. For those of us who cannot ever have enough McKennitt in our collections, this modest offering is like dessert! It may not be a full course, but it is a treat worth having none~the~less. Consider this a companion to her lovely ''To Drive the Cold Winter Away''...and enjoy her Celtic~Scottish~English offerings as a welcome respite from the holiday clamour. Stir up some Wassail and bake some currant scones. Light candles of red and green and fill your home with Loreena's sparkling voice this holiday season! *!Bright Blessings!*
This is a great CD! I recommend to all the people that the Celtic-Scottish-English music is their favorite to listen this CD. I enjoy!
