Overview

Nola Leary would have been content to stay in Kilcairy, Ireland, healing villagers at her family’s clinic with a mix of magic and modern medicine. But a series of ill-timed omens and a deathbed promise to her grandmother have sent her on a quest to Half-Moon Hollow, Kentucky, to secure her family’s magical potency for the next generation. Her supernatural task? To unearth four artifacts hidden by her grandfather before a rival magical family beats her to it.

Complication One: Her grandfather was Mr. Wainwright and the artifacts are lost somewhere in what is now Jane Jameson's book shop. Complication Two: her new neighbor, Jed Trudeau, who keeps turning up half naked at the strangest times, a distraction Nola doesn't need. And teaming up with a real-life Adonis is as dangerous as it sounds, especially when he’s got the face of an angel and the abs of a washboard—can Nola complete her mission before falling completely under his spell?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Harper serves up plenty of hilarity in her third Half-Moon Hollow smalltown fantasy (after The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires). Nana Fee, on her deathbed, makes her granddaughter Nola Leary promise to hunt down the Elements, four everyday objects owned by Nola’s late grandfather. If Nola can’t find them quickly, her family’s renowned healing abilities will disappear. The Elements are most likely hidden somewhere in Nola’s grandfather’s bookstore, now owned by vampire Jane Jameson. Nola reluctantly heads from Ireland to Kentucky and enlists the help of Jane and her friends while trying not to be distracted by hunky local Jed Trudeau, who has a few secrets of his own. Harper fans will be thrilled by this return to the hysterical world of Jane and crew, and even more delighted to add Nola’s new face to the mix. Agent: Stephany Evans, FinePrint Literary Management. A WITCH’S HANDBOOK OF KISSES AND CURSES by Molly Harper is a laugh out loud read. Nola is the head of the family now that Nana Fee has died. It is up to her to gather the four Elements needed to keep the greedy side of the family from regaining their witchcraft and binding Nola’s side of the family from using their witchcraft. She has to travel from Ireland to Kentucky to find the Elements. Along the way she learns of descendants and makes her own family of Kentuckians. I loved Nola. She is funny and witty. When she meets her neighbor Jed and they start bantering I howled at them. Jed is certainly not what he seemed. Sometimes I was not sure what he was. Molly Harper kept you guessing about Jed. When the truth came out I agreed with Nola about him but the chemistry was so good between them I did not want her to be too harsh. When Nola learns of her descendants I found it interesting. I liked the blend of human and paranormal. That added another layer of humor to the story. I loved Jane. She was probably my favorite secondary character along with the mother. I could certainly relate to the relationship. I liked the humor and the story of A WITCH’S HANDBOOK OF KISSES AND CURSES. I cannot wait to read more of the series.

This was my least-enjoyed Molly Harper book - I loved her 'Nice Girls' series and liked the '...Naked Werewolf' books as well, so I was excited to see a new book that included some of my beloved vampires/supernaturals from Half Moon Hollow. However, the humor in this book was not as fresh as what I've grown to expect from the creator of Jane Jameson. The story was ok, a lot of the scenes were ok, but I had high expectations for wittiness and intelligent humor that were only occasionally met. Then the ending part (to avoid spoilers, let's call it the showdown) was just plain silly and underdeveloped. Molly's literary villains usually have some sinister plot or characteristics that are bizarre but hilarious (Jane's grandma who started to wear crosses the size of hubcaps that made her look like Flavor Flav - that's cracked me up for years), but this one was, well, mean and sad. I think it had a good basis, some fair comedy and witty remarks, but could have been made much better.

I felt like it started off a bit slow, with a huge info dump, but once that was out of the way I ended up really enjoying this book. I loved seeing all of the Half Moon Hollow residents again and it was interesting to see them through Nola's point of view.

Molly Harper always injects plenty of humor in her books and this one is no exception. It is a fun read, but the characters come across as flat and I found I didn't warm to them.

3.5 Stars ~Reviewed by SUZANNE & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog This was a fun book with great characters and although it didn’t rock my world, it made me laugh and look forward to the next page…~ Under the Covers Nola Leary has come to Half Moon Hollow, Kentucky because of a death bed promise made to her grandmother, one her grandmother is determined that she honour even from beyond the grave. She has to find the four Elements, four artifacts each representing one of the elements, before her rivals do, if not her whole family lose their magic. But things get complicated when she finds long lost relatives, some crazy new friends, not to mention her Adonis like next door neighbour who seems to be allergic to wearing tops… I always enjoy a Molly Harper book, it is hard not to with her mixture of funny banter and some really quirky heroines and of course a great romance. Although they never quite make it to a 5 feather review with me, that doesn’t stop me enjoying her books and looking forward to the next one. What stood out for me most in this book was the humour and the relationship Nola quickly develops with some familiar characters such as Jane Jameson and Dick Cheney. The romance between Jed and Nola was really good as well, they had chemistry from the start but it was a allowed to build up so that you got to know Jed. He wasn’t just the sexy guy who was there for her to conveniently fall in love with, but a funny character with issues of his own. The story line itself about the elements wasn’t particularly strong and it was a bit of an anticlimax at the end but it was a good vehicle for Nola to start looking at the issues she had with her magic and eventually come to terms with it’s presence in her life. This was a fun book with great characters and although it didn’t rock my world, it made me laugh and look forward to the next page, what more can I ask for? *ARC provided by publisher

I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of laughing all the while seeing characters grow into better people than they were. Molly's wit and snarky humor is one of my favorite things about Half Moon Hollow. Nola & Jed don't disappoint either. LOVE them and Jed has some of the best lines I have read in a while. His I'm gonna go all bubba on you and is this isn't a porno are some of my favorites. Nola has quite a few surprises while she is here in the states and I LOVE all of them; the good the bad and the ugly. She truly learns a lot about herself she never lets those curve balls keep her down and grows into a strong and more determined woman.

I have been TRYING to read this book since I won my signed copy from Molly Harper, and today was the day I finally had that chance. As always, I LOVED the book! Molly's impressive skills as a humorous author had me nearly crying at times from laughing so hard! A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses is about Nola Leary, an Irish woman whose family happens to be gifted in magic and uses it to the benefit of the people around them. However, there's another faction of family which long ago decided that their powers meant they were better than their non-magical neighbors, and since that time, Nola's family has bound their powers. However, to keep the powers bound, there is a ritual that must be done, and it requires several items that are, of course, not in the family's hands. Nola is sent to retrieve the items, and that's where our journey begins. Nola travels to Half-Moon Hollow to track down the items, which her grandmother gave to her grandfather for safekeeping. Of course, the journey isn't as easy as that. While she searches for the items in the store that her deceased grandfather left to Jane Jameson (who you should know from some of Molly's previous books), Nola also meets her new neighbor, Jed, and he has some secrets of his own. I loved this book, and I'm still not sure how Molly manages to make each book better than the last, but I'm now eagerly awaiting the next excursion into Half-Moon Hollow. In this book, I had guessed Jed's secret pretty early on, and I was thrilled to find out that I was actually wrong. I also loved the scene where Nola learns *redacted for spoilers* and has a hilarious reaction to the news. And of course, it's always fun to check on Jane, Gabriel, Zed, Andrea, and Dick! Out of a five star rating, I give A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses 4.5 stars. Note: I won my copy of this book. I was not required to write a review, and I did so because I enjoyed the book so much. Winning the book did not change my judgement of the book at all. Note II: This review is cross-posted to Goodreads, Amazon, and Shelfari.

Molly Harper delivers again! Love "revisiting" Half-Moon Hollow and meeting some new, and very interesting, characters! Molly always finds the right mix of humor, romance, mystery, adventure, charm and wit!

I received an e-copy from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Friends have been telling me "You need to try Molly Harper". My response...she's on my TBR I promise! Well, let me tell you I'm SOOO glad I finally listened to them and read A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses! It was instant love! It's such an easy read full of fun, romance, and characters that have you rolling with laughter and routing for their HEA! Fortunately for me (since this is my first time reading), Molly does an incredible job of filling in the blanks from the previous Jane Jameson and Half Moon Hollow books without completely rehashing prior events that I didn't feel lost or just dumped into unfamiliar ground...just jonesing to read more of the backstory! If you're a Molly Harper fan you'll enjoy spending some more time with the characters you've grown to love as well as getting to know Nola and Jed. Ah, Nola and Jed. Nola comes from a family of witches and has spent her life focusing on the healing aspects rather than nurturing her magic to become a well-rounded witch. That plus a botched binding results in some rather unexpected magical outbursts. Not exactly what she needs when her family's magical fate is on the line. Then there's Jed...sweet, hunky, secretive Jed. I spent a good portion of the book trying to figure out exactly WHAT he was...because normal human? Nope not even close. I gotta admit, Molly surprised me with him and I loved the twist she took. Looking for a book to put a smile on your face and keep you glued to the pages? Then run out and grab A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses! You'll be smiling in no time! As for me? I'm off to pick up the rest of the books!

Molly Harper is absolutely one of my favorite authors at the moment and A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses was a humor-filled romp that had me laughing out loud. Nola Leary comes to Half-Moon Hollow on a hunt for four magical artifacts to help bind a rival family as her family has done for centuries before her. When she gets to Kentucky, she finds that the items may be hidden in Jane Jameson's bookstore and she has a gorgeous next door neighbor that keeps distracting her from her mission. With a little help from some overzealous vampires, she might just find the items before the deadline and her rivals do. I really enjoyed this book and I got swept along with the story almost immediately. Nola was a fun character and I loved the fact that she was a healer as well as a witch. I was also excited that Jane and the Scooby gang were a big part of the storyline and we got to catch up with them after the events of Jane's wedding. This book was filled with hilarious dialogue, hot romance with the next door neighbor and enough paranormal elements to keep you thoroughly entertained. This is the second book in the Half-Moon Hollow series and Molly Harper doesn't disappoint with this one. If you haven't read her books, you should be because she will keep you laughing until the very last page.

Nola Leary must leave her home in Ireland to retrieve four extremely important magical items for her family. These items were entrusted to the man that fathered her mother, but is unaware of the family he left behind. This man, Mr. Wainwright and Nola’s grandfather, has recently passed away leaving his book store in a remote Kentucky town to vampire friends. The store was in disarray and when it was cleaned out it seems the artifacts all have gone missing. Now Nola must track down where they all went. Making unlikely and new friends along the way, Nola starts a journey of self discovery...learning more about herself and her abilities as a witch. Nola’s mission will change her life forever and if she doesn’t succeed her family’s magical legacy just may be destroyed. This was a highly entertaining story. Nola’s smart cracking personality had me laughing too many times to count. I especially enjoyed Nola’s difficulties and interactions with her abnormally gorgeous neighbor Jed. The romantic encounters were combustible. The characters were absolutely charming. The mystery and search for the artifacts entertaining. A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses was purely a fun, refreshing and enjoyable read. This ARC copy of A Witch's Handbook of Kisses Curses was given to me by Edelweiss and Pocket Books in exchange for an honest review. Publish Date May 28, 2013.

Another hilarious adventure in Half Moon Hallow.  Witch Nola Leary is sent by her family to find four artifacts that her grandmother had entrusted to Nola’s now deceased grandfather.  This leads her to Half Moon Hallow where with the help of Jane Jameson, Dick Cheney and company she sets off on her treasure hunt.  Add in the sexy shape-shifter next door and we are off on another fantastic adventure. My husband always knows when I am reading a Molly Harper book by the amount of giggles, snickers, and outright guffaws.  This book is no different.  If you enjoy funny contemporary PNR you have to check this book out.
