A Good Variety of Recipes From Around the World

This is a fun cookbook with cake recipes from around the world, along with interesting history and facts about the desserts and regions they come from. The author writes in a conversational style that made this entertaining to read and the many color photos give it a coffee table book feel.

The real treasure, though, is the recipes. There are some familiar classics like black forrest cherry cake, carrot cake, and red velvet cake, alongside unusual fare such as mooncakes from China, baked cheesecake with coffee jelly from Japan, Pavlova from Australia, rum cake from Tortuga, and Kransekake from Norway, to name just a few.

I made the New World Spice Cake, a recipe from the West Indies. It wasn't very sweet so I added some powdered sugar icing which made it taste better. A few other recipes I'd like to try are Hummingbird Cake (a cake made with tropical fruits), cranberry pound cake, Vasilopita (an almond cake from Greece), and funnel cakes from Pennsylvania.

I like this cookbook for the variety of recipes not found in regular cookbooks. It would be a nice addition to any baker's collection.

I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required.
