Internet Book Watch
Playwright and editor Judy Reeves has taught writing, led creative writing workshops, and participated in writing groups for years. A Writer's Book Of Days is a compilation of all that she's learned when people get together to write. She says "the book came about because I saw the difference ongoing, regular practice could make in a writer's life." Because she found that people often needed a "prompt" to help get them started, she included a topic for every day. She says "they are all guaranteed to work if you give yourself over to them, trust the process, and follow your pen." Reeves says what is most important is to make a commitment to yourself that you will write every day. Then make an appointment with yourself and keep it. Treat it as seriously as you would any other appointment by not breaking it except for an emergency, and rescheduling when it does have to be broken. She emphasizes that writing is like any other skill--it is honed by practice. Her book is much more than a listing of writing topics, however. Each month starts with "Guidelines for Writing Practice" designed to create "a solid foundation on which to build your daily work." That's followed by each month's main writing tip, covering subjects like getting started, overcoming fears, and getting "unstuck." Monthly, "The Writing Life" starts with wisdom and advice from famous authors, historical and contemporary, then offers suggestions for all the myriad problems that beset writers, such what to do when your writing is boring. Each month ends with "Beyond Practice," an opportunity for writing practitioners "to honor themselves as a writer and nourish the writing-self . . . They are to have fun, to play, to expandpossibilities, and explore the further reaches." All writers, novice or experienced, will find A Writer's Book Of Days encouraging, inspirational, and a reference they will enjoy turning to every day. Buy a copy for yourself, and extras for all your writing friends--it's the ideal gift for everyone wanting to put words to paper.

Packed Full of Inspiring and Helpful Stuff!

Whether you are a novice writer or an experienced author, a blocked writer or one whose words are flowing, there is something in this book for you. The structure Reeves employs is useful: for each day of the year there is a writing ¿prompt¿ to jump-start one¿s writing (¿Write about someone who sinned.¿ ¿You are in a motel room¿¿ ¿This is what she said.¿). For each of the twelve months, there is a series of essays about scores of topics, including tools for writing practice, writing from the senses, dancing with your shadows, telling secrets, the writing life, honoring yourself as a writer, imagination, and much, much more. And Reeves has packed the book full of inspiring quotes from famous writers, unusual facts about authors, and tactics to use to keep on writing and for improving one¿s craft. ####### Whether you use this book on a daily basis or as a periodic stepping-off point, there will be something in it to inspire and motivate. I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to try new ideas and to grow as a writer.
