Rilke is so deep and beautiful therefore it is often hard for me to read a lot of what he writes at one time. The short daily readings start my day in a reflective way. Sometimes the writing is profound and sometimes I just delight in the beauty of the writing.

Rilke's name barely registered in my consciousness until I heard Krista Tippett refer to him several times in her radio program "On Being". It soon became evident that he was a poet she had closely studied and then, when she interviewed Joanna Macy one of the translators of this volume, I realized I had to get to know him better. That led me to buying a second and a third copy to pass on to other family members. Particularly nice for newcomers to his poetry is that this is a 'calendar' book, one day, one excerpt, a gentle introduction to a fascinating writer.
