Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Ever since Josteen Gaarder's Sophie's World was published, philosophy has become an "in" topic for young people. DK's British import ratchets the age level down another notch in this accessible, picture-book style offering. The Greeks to Foucault are covered in short info-bites strong on anecdotes. The approach is good. What kid wouldn't remember Pythagoras after learning that he forbade the eating of beans because, when opened, they looked like human embryos-and who was murdered by an irate mob on the edge of a beanfield that he refused to crush? Or that Wittgenstein spent all his free moments watching B-westerns to forget his anguish? Definitely an approachable introduction to the subject.
