Reviewer: Barbara Kitzes, MS, RN, CS (Rush University College of Nursing)
Description: This is an excellent resource pocket handbook for critical care nurses, from novice to experienced clinicians. The flip-page style, tables, and algorithmic format are unique to find in one resource manual.
Purpose: The purpose of this handbook is to include information that clinicians will need at their fingertips in a quick reference format. The handbook does accomplish this goal by including items such as cardiovascular and neurology assessment information; troubleshooting tips for hemodynamic monitoring and mechanical ventilation; as well as ACLS algorithms and intravenous medication guidelines.
Audience: All critical care nurses from novice to expert can use this handbook.
Features: The thorough tables, figures, and algorithms in this pocket handbook are taken from the AACN Handbook of Critical Care Nurses. The table of contents quickly allows the reader to find information. Much of the information included in this text is difficult for clinicians to remember; therefore, this pocket handbook allows the user to quickly look up a needed reference. I especially liked the cardiac rhythms, ECG characteristics and treatment guide, and the Glasgow coma scale information. This handbook also includes unique information on alternative therapies in the ICU setting.
Assessment: I am pleased to see all this information compiled into one pocket handbook and will recommend this handbook in the future.
