Description: This book and DVD on the hip, part of the Advanced Arthroscopy series from the Arthroscopy Association of North America, also includes access to a searchable online version.
Purpose: The goal of the series is to present the best the world's leading organization on arthroscopy has to offer on arthroscopic techniques for the shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow, wrist, and the knee. These are lofty goals that I likely would trust no other organization to accomplish. Richard Ryu, AANA's past president, the lead editor for the series, has brought together experts in each anatomic area to author the individual titles. This book on the hip is edited by Thomas Byrd and Carlos Guanche, both well-known educators and arthroscopists.
Audience: Like all the books in this series, this one clearly targets orthopedic surgeons at a broad range of skill levels who wish to improve their arthroscopic skills. Residents to established arthroscopists will get great benefit from reading this book and viewing the supplemental videos on the DVD. The contributors are a literal who's who of experts in a broad range of arthroscopic techniques for the hip.
Features: This comprehensive book covers basic setup and diagnosis for complex cartilage, labral issues, femoral acetabular impingement, psoas release, and iliotibial band debridement techniques. The DVD adds depth to the book, and access to the online version enables readers to reference the book anywhere they need it.
Assessment: The editors have done a wonderful job of creating a go-to, current reference on hip arthroscopy. I have activated my online access which will allow me to use this reference at home, in the OR, or wherever I have Internet access. I am sure many of my colleagues will take similar advantage of this quality offering from AANA.
