Devotional Thoughts Direct from the Father’s Heart Charles Slagle has captured the tender loving words of affirmation, wisdom and comfort from God the Father in his book “Abba Calling.” The book is made up of daily readings representing letters from God. Each letter includes promises from the scriptures with intimate words of personal encouragement, inspiration, and comfort. Every single reading contains a wonderful revelation of God as Father, Abba, or Daddy. Each day’s reading becomes a brief encounter with God the Father, intimate times of worship giving me a sense of connecting with God experiencing his presence in a time of renewal, reflection, and contemplation. Slagle has profound insight into the mind of God and the realities of the busyness of daily schedules. His writing offers hope, guidance, and promise to readers in every walk of life facing seemingly insurmountable difficulties, hectic lifestyles, family adversity, or impending economic crisis. Slagle writes from his own experience of intimacy, love, and worship as he unfolds the concept and drama of God the father reaching down to embrace his child as Abba or Daddy. The eye-catching cover, binding, format, contents, and attractive presentation page add to value of “Abba Calling.” In addition to your own reading enjoyment the book is the ideal gift for holidays, graduation, birthdays, or any other gift giving occasion. The daily affirmations of the book also make it especially meaningful for shut-ins or for hospital visitation. A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own.

Anyone who hears His beautiful voice knows that this sounds exactly like Him! Unfortunately, there are some who don't believe they've heard Him unless they feel condemned to failure, beaten up and ashamed. If you do feel that way, I can assure you it wasn't His voice you heard! He is a compassionate, loving Father willing to go to the ends of the Earth and beyond to show you how much he loves you. His gentle rebukes leave you wanting more than anything in the world to show Him how much you love Him and don't want to bring sadness to His heart. It's the goodness of God that brings man to repentance. Is He also a God of judgement? You bet, and that day will come but it is not reserved for His children. It never was. To fear God is to fear breaking His heart, but even that doesn't stop Him from loving you with the most perfect form of love. Charles Slagle has allowed us to eavesdrop on his most private moments with his Abba. May his book be a confirmation to those who wonder if those loving words they hear could possibly be from the lover of their soul.

A personal relationship with Christ....this book is full of letters from your "heavenly father" or Dad. This will be read over and over again in my house.

This book promotes a soppy, condescending and wishy-washy embrace of a so-called God who is not the Christian God but who is put forward as such and yet is defined and boxed by the writings to the extent that he is so religiously twee to be immensely off-putting. And I am writing as a believer in and follower of Jesus. No real Jesus here. Just a Jesus understood, or should I say misunderstood, in an earth-bound way. It’s another pile of sentimental religious verbage, holding people back in babyhood from encountering God in a more fully-fledged and genuine relationship beyond this book’s drivel masquerading as a “help” to get there. Really, do you not think we have truly seen enough of these bland, well-meant but hopelessly short of actually hearing God for oneself type of “devotional” books?! It does very little and maybe even nothing to impart Life, because it is a product of, and it encourages the indulgence of, an un-renewed religious mindset. It merely goes to the limits of the writer’s experience of God and that limit is regurgitated with endless platitudes that you might hear similarly from an ineffective church anywhere. To be honest the book made me want to run away from it, it is so not how God speaks! The feeling I got was that it was like listening to a mother who “knows best”, or a schoolteacher who has stopped learning but who unfortunately still reckons to have the answers for a new generation that needs different ones. I am glad I don’t have a “Dad” writing to me every day like the Dad in this book…constantly referring to the reader as “Child” in a supercilious way. Smothering…the names given to the reader to introduce the page contents:- Bewildered Searcher, Struggling Child, Worried Warrior, Tired Disciple….Ack! The churches would be a lot better off if this sort of human “projecting” of what this book’s claustrophobically sugary and cuddly soft-toy God might be saying was replaced by writing things that God is wanting said to reveal Himself as He actually is. In other words, a writer hears from God before representing His heart. I recommend we all read the bible instead of this book which I felt misrepresented God by presenting an “I know it all” or superior-being talking down to the reader. It’s kind of a dated concept, the whole thing of a daily devotional “quiet time” using another human’s religious thinking which replaces and actually blocks a relationship with the Holy Spirit becoming your “living” teacher about the true nature of God. It was also visually hard to read because the red-brown text color is so similar to the dark background page color. Even using the computer "zoom in" facility hardly helps. I think that many people would find this incompatible choice of text and background colors a real problem when reading. I was given a copy of this book by Destiny Image Publishers on condition that I post a review. I thank them for their generosity, but I can in no way endorse this particular book as a worthwhile item for anyone’s spiritual or even intellectual absorbtion! It’s wearisome material from a publisher aiming for breakthrough publications in the Christian arena.
