Read an Excerpt

Off I go to the beach to run in the sand,
Oh how I love the smell of that hot dog stand.
Why, there's a balloon floating in the air,
It was just here, but now it's over there.
It's a big red balloon that says, "I Love S.B."
It means South Beach, but it's the initials of Mr. B.
So I want to take this prize home to him today,
Oh no, oh dear, it's floating away!

For the Age 4 to 8 Child a Mixed Bag

ABBEY THE CAVI is an obvious work of love by new writer Lisa Balaam who obviously equally loves her own Cavalier King Charles Spaniel on whom this book is based: in many ways the book seems to be a promotional piece for introducing the world to this particular breed of dog. But all that aside the antics and adventures of the title character are mixed with reality, some straightforward psychological lessons (Balaam is a psychologist by training), and enough make believe friends to sustain an easily entertained child during repeated readings. The style of writing (everything must rhyme no matter how tangentially) is rather singsong and many children like that rhythm. The illustrations by Joe Palmisano do well in depicting Abbey and her pelican, seagull, crab and dolphin friends (this man obviously understands cartoon illustration), but the backgrounds utilize photographic inserts that are tedious and less than successful. The design of the book is weak. But for a little romp of a children's story it reads well enough. One can only regret that the book had not been so self-serving on the part of the Balaams - it gets in the way.
