Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
This bright and shiny alphabet shows the letters from apple to zebra and features happy, smiling children all of whom have Down's syndrome. Each letter (lower and upper case) appears in a colored box, floating on a white background. In the center of the page a child or two is photographed holding, petting, or examining an object. All background material has been eliminated from the photographs, so the children float or sit in the white space. The photographer draws the viewer in to this central portrait by eliminating detail and background distractions. Even when modeling an action, "hugging," or petting the dog, the children convey stillness rather than motion. A variety of ethnic groups are represented, as are boys and girls from toddler to the age of eight. Below each picture is a single word in large type. The publisher provides a glossy, reinforced binding with full-color photographs that add to the appeal. Though catalogued with "mentally handicapped," the alternative classification of "E" seems more helpful since using it will allow the book to be found in the alphabet books by everyone. This title is useful for special-needs children as well as to sensitize a general audience. A very welcome addition to school and public library collections. (Picture book. 3-5)

    Excellent education tool

Being a parent of four children I know the importance of reading to your child daily. ABC for You and Me is an excellent teaching tool for any parent or educator. The simplicity of each page is ideal for any parent (person) to sit and read with their (a) child. Even if you have only 10 minutes to read together, your child will see one word and a picture to correspond with a letter in the alphabet. Your child will be concentrating not pointing to alot of different objects. A simple way to spend quality time with your child!

A simple yet wonderful ABC book

ABC for You and Me is a wonderful book for teaching children both letter and word recognition. Each page shows a child with Down syndrome (some with a sibling or friend) interacting with an object for that letter (A- apple, B- ball, C-cat). The pictures are against a white background and only have one object on each page, with the letter at the top, and word at the bottom. It allows the children to focus, with no distractions on the pages.

    ABC for You and Me

I hope this book is a great beginning for educating the world on Down syndrome and how beautiful these children are. My grandson is the first Down's child to ever go through our regular school system and is doing great. You will notice in the book that there are twin combinations, where one twin has Down syndrome and the other doesn't, and there are regular children with the Down's children. All these children are from New York State but various parts of the state and there are a variety of ethnic groups. This book tells a whole other story then just a child learning their ABCs. There is another whole lesson here to be learned. You don't have to have a child with Down's syndrome for your child to get something from this book. Our moto is: They are a child first and Down's second. Another words, a CHILD with Down's syndrome, not a DOWN syndrome child. Yes!! I'm one proud grandma to see my grandson's picture in this book. I've already bought 10 books and am giving them as gifts. It is encouraging to see so many positive responses to this book, and God bless each and everyone of you who have purchased this book.
