Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Rachel Miller
San Francisco is a very busy city with a lot going on. Here, photographs from the city provide the basis for an alphabet book. Robin Segal has chosen practical pictures for each letter. Some of the pictures are objects that every city has, while others show features that are unique to San Francisco. Next to each photograph, the relevant word is clearly written in an easy-to-read font. The pictures are clear and highly detailed. Each page is very colorful, which will encourage the reader to pick up the book more than once. Because the alphabet letters have different numbers of pictures associated with them, readers will learn that some letters are more popular at the beginnings of words than are other letters. This is an excellent book to encourage reading and phonics. It would be an outstanding asset to a social studies curriculum as well as a reading program. This is a part of the "All About Cities" series. Reviewer: Rachel Miller

PreS-Gr 2

These books take an alphabetical tour of several major American cities, using color photographs to represent the letters. The worthwhile concept builds vocabulary and familiarity with urban landscapes but is undermined by layouts that emphasize quantity over quality. Pages are crowded with too many illustrations of items that are sometimes generic ("joggers," "kids," and "trash cans" appear in all three books). On some pages the contrast between font and background color is minimal, making the text difficult to read. Redundant entries are common (the "W" page in Boston, for example, displays both "walk signal" and "walk signal button"). Miami includes a Spanish translation of each word, though in Spanish this is no longer an alphabet book. Sadly, the books lack maps or introductory paragraphs about what makes each place unique, historically and/or culturally.-Amy Rowland, Guggenheim Elementary School, Port Washington, NY
