 Seattle Magazine
“This sturdy tome with vintage-inspired aesthetic does double duty as an alphabet primer and baby’s first lesson in style.”

Motherrising
"Matthew has done it again with his ABC book... and with some nice surprises like..."V is for Vole! I especially love that the paintings allow some of the wood to show through the paint...it kind of adds a little cheekiness to the term board book."

Here Come the ABCs - Matthew Porter's stunner will mesmerize both you and your child with simple text and gorgeous acrylic animal paintings on wood grain.

"A is for alligator," but don't worry about this critter -- with its gently rounded shape and wide eyes -- scaring your little one. In fact, all the animals in this sturdy board book, each representing a letter of the alphabet, serve as friendly representatives of their species. Acrylic-and-ink paintings on a grainy wood background create a handsome, vintage look, and telltale features (like big beaver teeth) help young children easily grasp the creatures' differences. Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The illustrations are unusual in this ABC book. Research revealed that Porter used acrylics on wood, and the texture of the wood is apparent in the pictures. The animals are stylized and do not look like real live animals or photographs of them. Kids with some exposure to animals will be able to identify many of those featured, but other children may be totally mystified. The beaver is standing up, and if he had been posed gnawing on a log, the identification might have been easier. Hedgehogs are not that well known nor are iguanas, quokkas, or uakaris. The more common animals such as a cat and dog are fairly easily identified, but to use a swallow for the letter "S" seems inconsistent since most kids will point and say bird; the same is true for "E" with its eagle. This is a book that might work better with older children who have fine motor skill issues, but much greater knowledge of the animal kingdom, and even then, they may find this board book a bit of a challenge.
