Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This alphabet book for the preschool set uses quintessential American landmarks and items to introduce the alphabet. It is as American as "Aa is for Apple Pie, warm from the oven" and "Bb is for Baseball." Other letters use similarly recognizable items such as eagles, fireworks on the Fourth of July, the Grand Canyon, the Liberty Bell, the Mississippi River, Pilgrims, quilts, Uncle Sam, and the White House. Simple yet bold and colorful drawings depict various animals, including bears, acting in scenes for each letter of the alphabet. For example, in "Jj is for jazz," the animals play musical instruments on stage. In "Tt is for trolley," the animals ride down the streets of San Francisco. A map of the United States is printed on the front and end pages. Written and illustrated by a husband and wife team, the book is a rousing celebration of Americana. The book may be used not only to introduce the alphabet, but to explore history and geography. 2004, Kids Can Press, Ages 2 to 5.

PreS-Gr 1-This alphabet book leaves much to be desired. Although the bright illustrations feature a cast of lovable cartoon animals, the text provides very little information. For example, "Aa is for Apple Pie, warm from the oven. Mmmm!" and "Bb is for Baseball-cheer the home team. Yay!" Some of the phrases could apply anywhere, such as "Cc is for Camping-sing together by the fire." When specific sites or landmarks are highlighted, such as the Liberty Bell or Niagara Falls, their locations are not mentioned. The endpapers include an outline map of the U.S. that pinpoints the states, but many are listed only by their abbreviations. Despite the colorful artwork, this offering falls flat.-Karen Land, Greenport Public School, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
