Meet the Author

Karen Lee has turned from illustrator to author/illustrator with ABC Safari. A visit to the Mote Marine Aquarium with her family inspired a series of drawings and poems beginning with the manatees she discovered there. She comments "They are surprisingly beautiful, comical, and graceful." Her sketchbook soon represented animals from all over the world. Karen has spent over three years on this project which was the runner up for the 2005 SCBWI Don Freeman Grant. She is also the recipient of the 2004 SCBWI Magazine Merit Award for Illustration for her wok in Highlights For Children. Karen has illustrated two other books for Sylvan Dell, One Odd Day and My Even Day. She and her husband, also an illustrator, are raising their family outside of Raleigh, NC. Karen's children join her on many research trips to museums, zoos and aquariums - tough job, but someone has to do it!

While the contents of the book were good the format used to convert the book to an eBook is horrendous. You cannot view both the animal and it's description on the same screen. You should be able to view both on the single screen. In my opinion this eBook is not work the money spent. If you really want this book DON'T buy the eBook.

i like the book just not for the nook color.

This is a nice book but it is not formatted correctly for use on the nook. What happens is that some pictures will come up and there is just a little text under the picture you then have to go to the next page where the picture is gone to finish reading the text or on the next page there will be a new picture of a different animal but the text will be for the previous animal. This should not be a NOOK book. When reading the book with the app on the PC it's fine.

Chances are, when you read ABC Safari to a child, it will not be a passive, you-read/she-listens event. Karen Lee has written a highly interactive book in which children readily will become engaged, leading to animated deducing and discussions between reader and child. ABC Safari is no average "A is for alligator" book. In each four-line verse, Lee provides clues to which animal will be named. For instance, "This creature loves to cut down trees - long teeth can handle that with ease. She stacks the logs into a dome which then becomes the Beaver's home." It's easy to imagine a child become increasingly excited as the words are read, eager to guess the animal that starts with "b" on that page. Indeed, Lee's colorful pictures provide visual verification in this fun guessing game. In addition, each animal is placed in its natural environment, encouraging further discussion for the keen observer about geography and animal habitats. Young readers also will delight in searching out the "Safari Boy" and his pet parrot found on each page, sometimes not so easily! On the final page, Safari Boy and his parrot are surrounded by the whole alphabet of animals. Here, kids might enjoy being challenged to "Find the animal that starts with the 'l' sound," or "What letter do you think 'tiger' starts with?" And the learning continues even after the story ends. Readers find a three-page spread of "animal cards." Each card has a picture of the animal in addition to its class (i.e., mammal, reptile, bird, etc.,) diet, and an interesting fact about each creature. (Did you know that quails "marry" for life?) Readers are encouraged to copy these pages onto card stock to sort by class or diet, or they can make two copies to play "Memory." Readers can expand the educational opportunities even further by visiting the publisher's website to find related websites and teaching activities. Quill says: ABC Safari provides an interactive, inspiring alphabet experience for reader and child!

ABC Safari Author Karen Lee has come through again in ABC Safari! Like her previous books, One Odd Day and My Even Day, she offers a fun way to learn. This time it is the alphabet on a safari journey to meet animals around the world. A boy and his parrot, like the young reader, unobtrusively observe each animal in its habitat. Can you spot the boy in each picture? Ms. Lee paints each animal accurately and to scale in its environment. This is an important feature for the young reader to learn size and scale. The rhyming text flows to an easy beat so that a teacher could use each animal¿s verse for movement or dramatization. The animal flash cards at the end of the book are a brilliant addition. Pre-readers will enjoy identifying each animal. Quite highly recommended for ages 2 to 7.
