Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The popular Uglydolls franchise expands into the Ugly Boards series, featuring the diminutive monsters. Though the book is foremost an abecedarian, the collaborators introduce mininarratives and cause-and-effect scenarios as well. On one spread, M ("more sugar") and N ("nonstop candy") result in a trip to the dentist's chair for a blue monster ("O is for open up!"). The sometimes sardonic humor will likely be lost on the youngest readers and some of the vocabulary (infirmary, ventilated, overdrawn) will need explanation, but it's a good antidote to more generic alphabet books. Also available: 123 4 U. Up to age 4. (July)

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
There are numerous ABC books so there is a real need to create a book that will stand out. "Ugly Boards" appears to be one series that offers a bit of silly humor with offbeat characters. The Uglies are certainly that. This romp through the alphabet is a bit bizarre—while "A" is for apple and we know they are good for us—too many can be bad. The scene shows eating too many apples can cause a trip to the doctor and adult readers all know "that an apple a day keeps the doctor away." The humor is really here on two levels, because the tots will certainly not get that implication from this scene. It continues in the same vein with too many cookies, candy, minding ones Ps and Q's and other silly things. The humor is much more adult than child-centered; however, if you want a little different take on your normal alphabet books try this one. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
