Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Magic Treehouse #47, one of the Merlin Mission series titles, sends Jack and Annie back to 1861, a week after Abraham Lincoln and his family has taken up residence in the White House just at the brink of the Civil War. In order to undo an enchantment on Merlin's penguin, Penny, who has been accidentally turned into a stone statue, Jack and Annie are in search of the third ingredient needed to break the spell: "a single feather from a hero's hand," which they are instructed to use "wisely to give him hope" to "heal his land." While readers may find it unsettling to have the juxtaposition of wizard Merlin, a petrified penguin named Penny, and the sixteenth president of the United States, Jack and Annie's White House time travel is nonetheless engaging in its own right. The two meet up right away with another pair of lively siblings named Tad and Willie, who take what seem to be shocking liberties in the White House—until Jack and Annie realize that their new playmates are none other than Lincoln's two sons. Osborne cleverly constructs the story to make the "single feather from a hero's hand" come to the duo in an unexpected way. The otherwise lighthearted story acquires a deeper poignancy from the historical fact of Willie's impending death from typhoid fever, followed by Lincoln's own tragic assassination. The feather of hope turns out to be one that is needed indeed, by all of us. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
