Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Well-written, authoritative and comprehensive...a useable, readable text that postgraduate trainees in medicine and surgery, fellows, and practicing oncologists will find useful in the care and management of cancer patients. It is well worth the price." - JAMA
From The Critics
Reviewer:Athanassios Argiris, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description:This is the third edition of one of the most recognizable oncology textbooks. It includes many updates over the previous edition of 2000.
Purpose:An excellent effort was made to encompass all aspects of clinical oncology and the vast developments in the field that have occurred in recent years. The organization is superb and the writing of high quality throughout.
Audience:Qualified experts have contributed to this textbook. Despite the complexity of the subjects, the authors have generally succeeded in presenting the material in a way that is readily understandable. There is a strong educational focus which makes this book particularly useful for oncology trainees.
Features:The book is divided in three sections covering the science of clinical oncology, problems common to cancer and its therapy, and specific malignancies. Each chapter begins with a succinct summary that highlights its salient points. Moreover, the book is rich in algorithms and illustrations. A CD-ROM is provided which readers will find helpful, especially given the large size of the book.
Assessment:This book without doubt ranks among the best comprehensive oncology textbooks.
New edition of a text that examines all aspects of the treatment of cancer by integrating expert perspectives from the disciplines of oncology (medical, surgical, and radiation) and hematology. The 96 contributions reflect the latest developments in basic science, pathology, diagnosis, management, outcomes, rehabilitation, and prevention. Topics include the science of clinical oncology (genetic, immunologic, and environmental bases of cancer; principles of prevention, diagnosis, and therapy; and understanding risk); general, hematologic, metabolic, and surgical problems common to cancer and its therapy; local effects of cancer and its metastasis; specific malignancies; and rehabilitation of the cancer patient. The volume begins with a section of color plates, and in addition contains about 1,000 figures, algorithms, flow diagrams, and tables. Each chapter includes an outline summary of key facts. Edited by Abeloff (Johns Hopkins U. and Hospital), James O. Armitage (U. of Nebraska Medical Center), Allen S. Lichter (U. of Michigan Medical Center), and John E. Niederhuber (U. of Wisconsin Medical School). Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
