Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-9 Frequent quotations from Adams' own letters give an intimate portrait of this intelligent, informed 18th-Century woman whose life with John Adams was inextricably involved with the momentous events preceding, during, and after the American Revolution. Understanding her husband's responsibilities, Abigail kept the home fires burning while her beloved husband was absent, sometimes for weeks and months at a time, but she always expressed her valued opinions and gave her support as he accepted the role that he knew he must play in the birth of a new country. Abigail Adams' personal point of view about events of the Revolution, as seen in her letters, and the description of 18th-Century rural and urban life are not only interesting reading but useful for research. The large size of the pages allows for double-column text and frequent black-and-white illustrations, most of which are reproductions of original drawings and art works of the period. The style is clear and concise, although not without occasional light-hearted humor. A biography that is objective and honest. Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, Tex.
