Overview

Abigail Adams was the wife of John Adams, the nation's second president. Abigail had strong opinions about war, politics, and the rights of women—and she wasn't shy about expressing them. Few women in her time were as outspoken. Abigail Adams helped mold John Adams's ideas—and so too our history.

TIME For Kids® Biographies help make a connection between the lives of past heroes and the events of today. In Abigail's times, women were second-class citizens who were given little education and had few rights. Abigail wanted men and women to have equal rights. Her words have inspired women for centuries, and today many of Abigail's ideas have finally taken hold.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Wife of the second president of the United States and the mother of the sixth president of the United States, Abigail Smith Adams lived during a revolutionary time in history. While reading about Abigail Adams life, the reader may gain an idea of historical context of the period. There are numerous captioned illustrations and color photographs found in each chapter. Insets provide additional information about issues and facts about the era. The inset "Special Delivery!" tells about the myriads of letters that Abigail and John Adams exchanged between themselves; the details of the letters helped historians to understand some of the conditions of the late 1700s. A time line at the back of the book summarizes some of the importance events in Abigail Adams' life. The biography is a springboard for further research into the life of Abigail Adams. Those children interested in reading biographies of Americans may find other interesting books in the "Time for Kids: Biographies" series. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
