Overview

Abigail Adams was the daughter of a country parson, a lively, brilliant girl of eighteen when she met the fiery young lawyer, John Adams. Immediately attracted to the "best educated woman he had ever met," John "did not scorn to share with her a man's world." After their marriage Abigail was her husband's full partner and confidant in all he did, and from her first simple, natural concern with his and their family's welfare her horizon immeasurably widened as he was drawn into grave revolutionary and national matters. Their participation in the revolution was whole-hearted, although somewhat less hearted than that of John's cousin, Sam. When John left Boston to be delegate to the Continental Congress, envoy to France, Ambassador to the Court of St. James, Abigail followed him first with her letters, then in person. Finally, she was able to fully express her passionate patriotism as First Lady.

The sources of this biography are largely Abigail's letters, and she was a peerless letter writer. These are crammed with interesting small sidelights by-passed by most history books. They have enabled Mrs. Whitney to create a vibrant portrait of a charming and vivacious lady and the remarkable times in which she lived.

    A Delight

I thoroughly enjoyed this look into Abigail Adams' life. The book doesn't read like a novel, but the life of Abigail Adams was presented in an easy to read way and at a steady pace. I appreciate that the author didn't try to embellish or add to her life or try to determine what Abigail's thoughts may have been. I particularly enjoyed that the text was riddled with snippets of Abigail and John's correspondence over their lifetimes. This is not a quick weekend read, but definitely worth taking a few days to delve into the life of Abigail Adams.

    I LOVE Abigail Adams!

If you are a US history buff, this book is a must read. Long before Susan B. Anthony and the Suffragettes, there was Abigail, a saucy, intelligent, free thinker who helped to shape our nation through her husband, John Adams. She also took up the tasks of managing the family farm and keeping her family financially sound at a time when women were considered unfit for such "manly" tasks.
But it's not just politics! If you love romance, you will love this book. The letters exchanged between Abigail and her "Dearest Friend" (husband John) are beautiful. Theirs was a love that surpassed the tests of time and distance.
This book was written in 1947 so you may find the style of writing a bit odd, but it is a masterful work. Abigail's personality leaps from the pages. I consider it a privilege to have spent time with her!
