Psychologists rely on Abnormal Psychology because it sets the standard for clarity, cutting-edge coverage, authoritative content, and clinical emphasis. It helps them fully integrate the details of all the disorders and distinguish between the more important concepts. The Big Picture feature emphasizes the important comparisons and contrasts to other concepts presented in the chapters. A new discussion on mental disorders shows how the interpretation of behaviors is dependent on the context in which those behaviors occur. The eleventh edition also demonstrates how context drives the definitions of normal and abnormal behavior. With the new features, psychologists will find the material to be more accessible, engaging, and informative.
Reviewer: Nicholas Greco IV, MS, BCETS, CATSM (Abbott Laboratories) Description: As the field of abnormal psychology evolves, so must the textbooks that we use to teach the next generation of psychologists and mental health providers. This 11th edition includes new research, a greater emphasis on real-world applications of psychology, new clinical case boxes, quick summaries, Check Your Knowledge Questions, and over 1,000 new references. Purpose: The authors have accomplished the goal of presenting up-to-date theories and research in psychopathology and intervention. Audience: This college-level textbook is targeted at undergraduate students enrolled in an abnormal psychology course. However, it is common that a book of this caliber will be used at the graduate level for advanced psychopathology. Instructors will find the book easy to use and presentation of the material is straightforward with real-world examples to aid in teaching. Features: The 17 chapters cover the major diagnostic areas of abnormal psychology. Among the many strong features are the Clinical Case Boxes, Focus on Discovery Boxes, Quick Summaries throughout every chapter, Check Your Knowledge Questions, and a DSM-IV-TR Table. Many supplements are also available, book including PowerPoint presentations, test banks, a study guide, and a book website. Also impressive is the accuracy of the psychopharmacological treatments for the various disorders, as these are often filled with errors in other books. Assessment: This is an exceptionally well-written textbook for abnormal psychology and would serve the needs of students and faculty alike. Highly recommended!
