Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
A bear can be happy or sad or glad, but he is never without something to do. This bear cavorts and plays as he chases butterflies, puzzles over a curious find, or climbs a tree for a sticky treat. As he goes about his very busy day, the bear makes friends with a variety of little friends...a squirrel, a bunny, and a skunk. At day's end, when the bear snuggles down for a well-deserved sleep, his newfound friends hunker down with him for a big bear hug. Rhyming couplets describe this bear's anything-but-uneventful day. Full-page illustrations bring to life a suitably large and lumpy bear whose antics will make little ones giggle. Bright oranges and reds are a colorful contrast to the big brown bear and have all the energy that is expressed in the text. While there is not a lot here, the simple story would be perfect for a toddler storytime or at bedtime after a toddler's busy day. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey

PreS-K—A pleasingly pear-shaped bear takes readers on a simple rhyming journey set in a hyper-colored fall landscape and populated by other friendly forest creatures. The book's large size and typeface make it ideal for sharing aloud, and the cheerful illustrations infuse the creature's physical shape with a jovial air. Young children will find the bear's range of attributes relatable and giggle at the spread showing him scratching his ample backside. "A bear can be puzzled/by a curious find./And sometimes a bear has to scratch his behind." Whether it is shared in a fall storytime or one-on-one, this picture book is just the thing for those who, like bear, "can be bored" with longer tales.—Jenna Boles, Washington-Centerville Public Library, OH
Kirkus Reviews
Just like a child, a bear has many moods, and he often needs a good hug. "A bear can be happy," the story begins, as the brown bear lifts his pointed nose into the air, full of brightly colored butterflies. "A bear can be sad" when all the butterflies drift away, and the bear, sitting on the ground, looks longingly up into the sky. Surplice's text is a simple 20-line poem, spread out over a dozen two-page illustrations. Readers watch the brown bear frolic in the falling leaves, examine and ultimately play with a turtle, climb a tree to get to a beehive and lie on his back in the water like a raft. This is so that his pals, the skunk, the rabbit and the squirrel, can ride on his tummy. And at the end of the day, just like a young reader, the bear gets very tired and hugs all his friends before going to bed. All the animals, big and small, curl up in the same way to sleep. Surplice's illustrations surprise with unusual colors--leaves and butterflies of hot pink and purple as well as oranges and browns and yellows, and a variety of background colors as well. Young readers should identify with the bear, though the simple, essentially story-free text needn't be so bland. Sweet but undistinguished. (Picture book. 3-5)
