Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathy Leggett
Penguins are fascinating creatures. Did you know that a penguin swims slower on the surface of the water, or that there is one penguin that lives in a hot tropical place, or that some penguins burrow under the ground? Facts such as these abound across the pages of this early reader. Soft, full page paintings of the seventeen types of penguins highlight this simply written story. Each of these beautifully detailed illustrations is accompanied by one sentence describing what the reader sees happening. The text is in a larger font positioned opposite the picture on a plain white page. This simplicity highlights the information for the reader, making the text pop out for ease of reading. The author selected vocabulary carefully to keep the readability level comfortable for early researchers.. Yet, all the facts you might want to know about penguins are included. This book is a perfect early research tool for young students who want to learn independently but have a limited reading vocabulary. An afterword is included that details more specific information about each penguin type, along with a glossary and bibliography to encourage inquiring young minds to seek out additional information about this fascinating creature. This is the newest book in the "About" series. Others in this series include books about birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish, arachnids, crustaceans, mollusks, marsupials, and rodents. A resource that will be sure to satisfy inquiring minds. Reviewer: Kathy Leggett

K-Gr 3—A brief overview of the 17 species of penguins inhabiting the Southern Hemisphere. A page with one or two simple sentences (or, sometimes, a partial sentence) alternates with realistic, often-full-page watercolor paintings of the featured animals. The text describes key physical and behavioral characteristics common to all penguins, diet, and some special characteristics of different species. Most of the beautifully rendered paintings feature a colony of penguins in a natural setting showing front, back, and side views of the birds; in some illustrations, they appear in the foreground, clearly displaying body markings, colors, distinctive crests, etc. Each species is identified in a caption on the text page. Short blocks of text, paired with small color replicas of the paintings, provide more detailed information in an afterword, along with the animals' geographical range. Although the amount of detail the minimal text offers is, perforce, limited, Sill's title still compares favorably with other introductions aimed at about the same age level. Its carefully executed watercolor artwork is more precise than that in Gail Gibbons's Penguins! (Holiday House, 1998) and depicts more species than the photographs in Frankie Stout's Penguins (Rosen, 2009). With its simple text and lovely watercolors, About Penguins will appeal to a wide audience.—Karey Wehner, formerly at San Francisco Public Library
