Children's Literature
This book is part of "We Both Read," a Level 1 shared reading series developed by reading specialists. There is a parents' page and a child's page. A word on the parents' page is highlighted in print and illustrated in the picture. The word is explained on the child's page in vocabulary the level 1 reader should understand and learn. There is a photograph with a pet or pets on each page. This book is about popular and unusual kinds of pets. In simple language it discusses the joys, as well as the responsibilities, of pet ownership. A skillful adult could do a great deal of teaching words. Using the book could make it a fun time for learning. Sharing and enjoying books together may help reading develop faster. 2002, Treasure Bay, Ages 5 to 8.

K-Gr 2-The "both" in the series title refers to an adult and a child. A more sophisticated, smaller typeface for adults appears on the left, while the right side features larger type and only one or two simple sentences per page. Any difficult words on the child's page are introduced first, in bold, on the left. Both texts explain the responsibilities of pet ownership in terms that young children will understand. The large, full-color photographs feature both popular and unusual animals. A good choice for beginning readers and their families.-Jean Lowery, Bishop Woods Elementary School, New Haven, CT Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
