Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Sharp talons and hooked beaks are just a few features of raptors. Learn more about their basic characteristics and the different types of this particular group of birds, like the eagle, osprey, owl, and others. Throughout the book there are beautiful watercolor illustrations (plates) that fill the page and support the simple, introductory yet informative text. Captions identify the raptor and occasionally the secondary animal in the picture. Read about the different ways that these birds find food and shelter; see the osprey catching its prey from the water or the prairie falcon nesting on a ledge. The glossary may provide support with some of the content vocabulary. The Afterword section in the back of the book has additional information about the raptors in regards to each plate. For those children who wish to seek additional information about birds of prey, there is a list of books and some web sites to explore. This book would make a great addition to a collection or study unit about birds or animals. Check out the other books in the "About..." series which feature other animals. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—This book comes as a boon to young audiences. One short, clearly written sentence or phrase per page communicates the basics about raptors: who they are, where they live, what they eat, and how they hunt. Their similarities, such as strong feet with sharp claws, and their differences, such as locations and kinds of nests, communicate diversity in raptors throughout the world. Eighteen quality watercolors focus on the birds in their natural habitats. Then in an afterword, all of the illustrations are included in miniature with a short paragraph expanding upon the original topics introduced in the text. These deeper explanations reveal more details: "Some raptors that raise their chicks on cliffs and ledges do not build a nest. They scrape out a place in the dirt and gravel to lay their eggs." This book is a must-buy for all libraries interested in building a strong natural-science collection for their young patrons.—Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA
