Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Though Piet Mondrian's grids and Jackson Pollock's splatters may no longer seem radical, abstract art still requires an overflow of language to describe and defend it. This book does the job well, with the help of quotations from writers and painters alike. Perry shares practical studio techniques for painting in layers and pouring and staining with paint as well as instructs on composition, pictorial space, pigment properties, and more. She clearly discusses the form's tradition, its ambiguous play with reality, and the psychology and physiology of seeing. Highly recommended. Another useful work for abstract artists, though not strictly for them, is Gemma Guasch and Josep Ascuncion's Color ("Creative Painting" series). Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
