Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In muted tones and a color palette appropriate for its camping theme, we accompany Hugo, Lina, Jose, and Pepe on their summer campout. Each youngster has a task to perform. Pepe is always the clumsy one; he is forever bumping into things, getting bit by mosquitoes, falling in the water, and worse. But ultimately it is Pepe who saves the day, or should I say night, when Pepe alerts the others of impending danger—a bear in their camp. An appropriate book to use when encouraging a child on his or her first camp out or when a child feels at odds or inadequate. Children will identify with Pepe and might recall instances where they felt as Pepe does. It will reinforce a belief in themselves, knowing that even a klutz can be a hero. This Red Level "Read It! Readers" book is fitting for children whose Spanish is elementary yet they know simple repetitive phrases. The illustrations, which are caricature-like, are definitely child-friendly. 2006, Picture Window Books/Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 6.
