Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jyotsna Sreenivasan
Phoebe, age 10, has always wanted to be a witch. Fortunately, in the world Phoebe inhabits this is an entirely reasonable goal. Phoebe goes to a typical elementary school in a typical American town-with a twist. In this world, witches casually fly around at night and transform old parks into blooming oasis. Phoebe doesn't have much hope of becoming a witch because everyone knows she is too clumsy. But fate has other plans. Phoebe becomes an "accidental witch" when she falls out of a tree at the cemetery and into a circle of witches. She has accidentally acquired witch powers and must learn how to use them. First, however, she must make a trip to Witchmart, where she can buy her cape, hat, and broom. This wacky book follows Phoebe as she learns to "tame" her broom, makes her friend disappear, and causes bubbles to foam out of a mean girl's mouth. No one believes Phoebe is really a witch except Peter Cook, a gentle boy who also wants to be a witch-alas, not very likely for a boy. However, at the end of the book he too becomes an accidental witch by falling out of the same tree! A funny, slightly surreal book.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6This lively fantasy creates a world much like our own, but where witchcraft and magic are accepted. Phoebe, a clutzy fifth grader, dreams of becoming a witch. Brooding in a tree in the cemetery, she accidentally falls into a circle of witches and absorbs the power of their spells. Unwittingly, her dream comes true. But the women are too busy to train her so she must bumble along, trying to control her wild powers and tame a rebellious broom. During her trials (and errors), she also copes with a bully, a lost friendship, and the disbelief of all who know her. In the end, the witches agree to give Phoebe lessonsif only to control the chaos she creates. Mazer has skillfully added a humorous fantasy element to the standard story of a girl dealing with normal fifth-grade problems. Readers will relate to the heroine and cheer as she fulfills her dream through persistence and good will. The short chapters make this a quick, appealing read.Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library
Lauren Peterson
"Every twenty years or so, it happens. Some girl blunders into witchhood and early powers." Clumsy fifth-grader Phoebe (Bee, for short) has dreamed of becoming a witch ever since she was four, so it's a dream come true when she falls into a circle of witches and accidentally absorbs some very concentrated powers. Unfortunately, it's "busy season" for the witches, and no one has time to teach the young apprentice how to use her talents. Bee tests her newfound powers in one hilarious scene after another, discovering that the abilities of an accidental witch can be quite" unpredictable. An imaginative, action-packed plot and a fine cast of characters, ranging from sweet, clumsy Bee to elegant Senior Witch Andelica, mark this light, fun-filled fantasy that will have great appeal.

    Great book for kids!

This is a great book for kids ages 6 - 12. I am 12 years old and I loved this book. If you are younger, and can't read, this is a great book for your parents to read to you for a bedtime story. It's not scary, it'a actually pretty funny! You'll love it!
