Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Shalvis’s San Francisco–based Heartbreaker Bay contemporary romance series started out strong, but this time around, property manager Elle Wheaton and romantic foil Archer Hunt have neither the quirky charm of Pru Harris and Finn O’Riley (Sweet Little Lies) nor the warm glow of Willa Davis and Keane Winters (The Trouble with Mistletoe). Elle and Archer do fulfill the overarching theme of the series: two people connected by complicated past issues who fight their mutual attraction against the backdrop of the city’s Cow Hollow District. Archer, an ex-cop, operates a security business that’s responsible for the safety of the building that Elle manages. He knew that the two of them working together was a bad idea—old baggage and all—yet he recommended her for the building manager job anyway. The daily torture of their close professional proximity is too slender a thread on which to hang the story, so Shalvis adds a subplot involving Elle’s black-sheep sister that lacks sufficient depth to be credible. Shalvis’s fans will still read this installment, but they know she can do better. (Jan.)

“Shalvis is back at it with another unforgettable romance. The third book in the Heartbreaker Bay series is a lot of fun and just plain enjoyable to read.”

“Accidentally on Purpose [is] simply a delight to read and lose yourself in.”
“The latest book in Shalvis’ Heartbreaker Bay series... is packed full of such genuine, charming characters that I challenge anyone not to fall for them…”
Library Journal
Apartment manager and accounting student Elle Wheaton and security expert and former cop Archer Hunt have a history that goes back to Elle's teenage years, when he rescued her from disaster and set her on the right path. In the interim, he's never lost track of her, and she's never stopped feeling she owes him, something that creates a host of problems when the attraction between them becomes irresistible. Colorful continuing characters pepper the scene (a savvy alley dweller is a favorite), while a lethal, vindictive thug amps up the tension in an enjoyable romance that smoothly continues the series. VERDICT Sexy, touching, and often funny, this San Francisco-set romance brings the city to life and a superbly matched couple to their senses. The popular Shalvis never disappoints. Shalvis (The Trouble with Mistletoe) lives in the Sierras near Lake Tahoe.
Kirkus Reviews
After a troubled childhood, Elle Wheaton is getting her degree and finding her way, with help from her friends and her job, and if her attraction to colleague Archer Hunt is a problem, it's one she's determined to ignore—in the same way he ignores her. Most days, Elle loves her job as the general manager of the Pacific Pier Building in San Francisco, and she definitely loves the circle of friends she's made in the businesses around her. She does not love the fact that she has to work directly with the head of Hunt Investigations, the building's security company. Archer is "big and tough, and frustrating beyond measure for so many reasons." Elle and Archer share a past, and after years of not having seen him, she was stunned to find him in the building where she landed the manager position a year ago. They've both avoided being alone together, though they've worked on projects and investigations with his team. When a freak electrical accident forces them to interact, however, Elle admits to herself that she's attracted to him and allows a thread of hope that he may feel the same way. Entering a new phase of a relationship that has always been complicated—they met when she was a minor, and he lost his job as a police officer when he sabotaged a mission to help her—the couple must grapple with their decision to explore a long-standing attraction while overcoming years' worth of baggage, then are thrown up against some dangerous old enemies when Elle's sister shows up seeking redemption. Shalvis continues her Heartbreak Bay series with Elle and Archer's roller-coaster romance that never confronts obstacles quite as difficult or dramatic as they choose to make them. For one thing, their individual decisions to protect themselves and each other from their attraction/romance/love with repetitive dramatic rejections grow tiresome. But using her signature witty banter, emotional back story, hot chemistry, and affecting romance, Shalvis pulls it off. Sexy, engaging, and fun despite some imperfections.

Jill Shalvis never fails in delivering stories full of unrequited love or livers who need to discover who they really love. In this book, Elle and Archer have to learn to admit that their feelings for each other are affected by their personal backgrounds, and if they allow themselves to really look into each other, they will see the love they actually have for each other.

Like striking two flints, it’s immovable force (Archer) meets impenetrable object (Elle). Stubborn and driven - a favorite! Elle and Archer – the two literally have sparks flying at every encounter. Like striking two flints, it’s immovable force (Archer) meets impenetrable object (Elle). Stubborn and driven, these two are the caretakers of the group. Elle with a past that doesn’t allow her to open or accept anyone easily has allowed the people of the Pacific Pier building to become her friends, and her responsibility. Archer, former cop and now heading a security firm is ALWAYS watching out for everyone he knows, and that includes Elle, after his first encounter with her some eleven years prior. Getting to know Elle has been an experience. She had a crappy childhood: absent father, grifter mother and an older sister that she, for years, looked out for. Rescued from a dangerous, if not foolhardy, situation when she was 16, Archer abandoned the orders of his superior officers to spirit her away from danger and potential arrest. She has always felt indebted to Archer, a feeling she despises as in her newly created life she is independent, in control, trustworthy, competent and unaccountable to no one. Archer’s rescue of Elle when she was a 16 year old child was the tipping point for him, showing him that he would always follow his own moral code and protect those who needed it, even as those decisions may not align with his superior officers in the police. He left the police department after rescuing Elle, to set up his own very successful and in demand security firm. E’s never lost sight of her though, attracted to her, amazed by her, and worrying for her. Now both are adults, they are constantly in contact at the building, and the sparks have them both discombobulated. Archer can’t get Elle out of his mind, and can’t actually connect to his actual feelings to not grunt, order and especially romance her. Elle can’t get past their very first encounter, and slowly is discovering his involvement in her life ever since that night. She’s feeling like his obligation, no matter how strong the pull between them, or her girly parts dancing the lambada every time she sees or thinks of him. Oh so darn fun – these two can’t get out of their own way to see what’s best for them, even if everyone, including ALL their friends and his very alpha set of employees are reading it like a neon billboard. Slowly both of them reveal their fears, and with plenty of back and forth, a bit of danger, a farting dog (one too many breakfast sandwiches) and a gunshot wound, Archer finally learns to speak for what he wants, in ways that Elle can hear. Plenty of advice (reluctant and otherwise) from the friends who know their match is perfection, their story comes full circle with plenty of smiles, steam and the perfect happy ending. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Elle has known Archer since she was a teenager. He had saved her but hasn't seen her for 11 years. Has stayed away but has been helping her with college and getting her job. Jill has developed these characters so you feel like you are part of their life. You must read to discover if Love or Hate is the ending. Joy943

Archer Hunt saved Elle Wheaton from a sting operation and kept her from being prosecuted when she was sixteen. Although his action ended his career as a cop, he never regretted his actions. He watched over her over the years and she met him again while working in the same building. He is not the marrying kind even though the attraction between the two is strong. When Elle decides to go out with other men, Archer sabotages her dates and she sees red. When she confronts him, her anger soon turns to a needing want. It takes a shooting for both to see what everyone else has already seen. They are made for each other and they finally see it. I love the interaction between Archer and Elle. Great story.

The Heartbreaker Bay series by author Jill Shalvis has quickly become a favorite of mine. Jill's an ace at crafting stories that revolve around an eclectic and captivating cast of characters, a world that immediately draws the reader in and makes them feel like a part of the action. ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE is Archer's and Elle's story, and I absolutely loved it. There has been something between Archer Hunt and Elle Wheaten since the night that they met 8 years ago. That something has evolved and changed over time, but it's always been there, and both Elle and Archer know it. Elle holds herself responsible for Archer throwing away his career in order to save her, and Archer feels responsible for Elle, making it his business to keep tabs on her. Stir in a lot of untapped chemistry, and you've got the recipe for one heck of an explosion. I absolutely adore Archer. He doesn't know quite what to do with Elle, but he can't stay away. And Elle, she's one heck of a totally take no prisoners chick, more than capable of taking care of herself and anyone else that comes along. The back-and-forth between them, the tension and heat, makes for some swoony exchanges, and I loved reading their interactions. Add in the awesome and quirky cast of characters that make up the rest of Elle's and Archer's circle of friends, and you've got my favorite kind of read. I really hope that Jill has more in store for us from Heartbreaker Bay, because Spence totally needs a book, as do Kylie and Elle's sister. In the meantime, though, 5 snarky, sexy, super-sleuthy stars. Read this book. Read all of these books, because they are all kinds of awesome, and I couldn't recommend them any more highly.

Loved it! My favorite in the Heartbreaker Series to date. Ellie is the perfect heroine, strong, self reliant, wanting to better herself and beautiful to boot. Of course she would have a very strong "alpha man" And Archer fills the bill to a "T". A great story told with the usual Shalvis style and humor.

This is my most favorite book to date in the A Heartbreaker Bay series. Archer and Ellie's chemistry has been explosive right from the start and we finally get to know the reason for their love-hate relationship. This book is off the charts entertaining and the classic Jill Shalvis' wicked sense of humor and wittiness is found throughout the entire book. Have gotten to know and love the characters of Heartbreaker Bay and am definitely going to miss them. ** I received an eBook copy from the author for the purpose of an honest review. To summarize: this was an another well written book in this series. I really like Shalvis her writing style and did enjoy this book despite some of the issues I had with it. I didn't really care as much for Elle and Archer as I did about the previous couples and the fight and then kiss type off relationship they had didn't quite work for me. Most of the book they pretended to hate each other to cover up their real feelings. It's armor or shield they sue to protect themselves, but I am not a big fan of those type of romances and found it hard to fully feel the romance because of that. I also felt we got to see less of the side characters in this book and the focus was more firmly on the main characters and a few new side characters. It is very well written and I easily read through this book. I also liked how we got to see more od Spence in this book as he is close to Elle. And I am so excited his book will be next as I really like his characters.

Accidentally on Purpose by Jill Shalvis is the 3rd book in her Heartbreaker Bay series. This book reads perfectly as a standalone. I did not read the first two books, but after meeting some of the characters, I will be going back and read them. This is a sweet romance story that not only centers on the two main characters, but a wonderful outstanding cast of friends that surround them. Elle Wheaton, our heroine, has a successful job working for Spence, one of those friends. Archer Hunt is our hero, who owns his own security firm and privately has always watched over Elle. Elle has known Arch for many years, since he once saved her life, and lost his police job in the process. Both of our heroes act like they can’t stand each other, but in reality they each have strong feelings for one another, which they are totally oblivious to. Archer, who is very bossy, treats Elle like a kid sister, but when she decides to date some of his workers or friends, he begins to change his tune. Each time she goes out with someone, Archer finds a way to sabotage it. It was fun to watch them constantly bicker, fight and ignore the sizzling chemistry between them. I also enjoyed the camaraderie of their friends, who from far know they are meant for each other. However, no one will dare step in and tell them, since both are extremely headstrong and stubborn. Within this story is a suspenseful situation that revolves around Elle sister, whom she hardly sees. It will take Archer and the gang to team up to help free her from her nemesis. This adds to the excitement, but without a doubt the entire story is about Elle and Archer; their antagonistic attitude to each other and watching it slowly begin to crumble. The sexual tension between them was very well done by Shalvis, which had us rooting hard for them to finally admit how they truly feel. As noted, I loved all the friends and look forward to reading more about each of them, including going back to read about the first two couples. My favorite besides Elle and Archer was Spence. I hope he gets his story soon. Heartbreaker Bay is a great series to enjoy, and I suggest you start with the first book. Accidentally on Purpose was a fun, at times exciting, sexy and enjoyable read. Once again, if you have not read Jill Shalvis, you are missing one of the best romance authors.

While this book can be read as a stand alone, it was so fun to watch these two through the first two books. Archer is all protective but keeps his distance and Elle is a total bada$$ who doesn't want anyone to see her feeling for Archer...no feeling (especially when he appears to have NONE). Yeah, right on both counts! And I'll admit I wondered what was up with these two as I enjoyed the other stories. This book...this book tells it all. It was interesting to find out about their past and why they are acting the way they are. They try very hard to just be friends but the sparks flying are hard to resist. It was a delight to watch these two. Elle decides she's over Archer and starts to date other men. Archer feels like no one is good enough for Elle which obviously means he should ruin her dates with other men. Yeah, that all went well. Lots of laughs, which I so love in my romance. And two more stubborn people I've never met. When you mix all this fun with some great characters, excellent story telling skills and the perfect ending and I couldn't help but read it straight through in one night. This author does such a good job of crafting a group of friends that are really a family. I just wanted to be part of it. It's always nice when a series continues to hold my interest this long and this one certainly does. I'll definitely be waiting for book four in the series to see what's up with Spence. He peeked my interest in this one and I want to know his story. If you love books that focus on a group of friends who support and tease each other, than make sure to check out this great one.

This book was perfect. (and I had pretty freaking high standards due to my excitement for Elle/Archer to finally get their sh*t together). So happy.

In this third book in the Heartbreaker Bay series, Jill Shalvis delivers a very sweet, sexy and sometimes tense romance between security specialist Archer Hunt and Elle Wheaton, property manager. There's history smoldering between these two and everyone in their group of friends sees it but them. Archer is the strong and mostly silent type. A former cop, he's now running his own private security operations and sharing an office in the same building with Elle. They both have feelings for each other, but there's a whole tangle of past history that keeps them from being honest with each other. Neither Archer nor Elle are good at communication, and both are trying very hard to protect their heart and each other. If only they would get out of their own way! Elle has a bit of a checkered past, more from necessity than anything else and she's finally got her life turned around. She's working and going to school to get herself in a better place. All of that gets challenged when her sister Morgan arrives in town, bringing trouble with her. What I loved about this book was the slow dance between Archer and Elle as they come together and retreat when things get too close. It takes a while for Elle's guilt to take a backseat to her deep feelings for Archer, and I liked that. Archer has secrets he's keeping too, but mostly, he's just a guy in love and has no clue how to let Elle know how he really feels. The gang of friends from the previous books in the series do a great job of helping them find their way to each other. I thought it was adorable how they all could see the love, respect and caring between Archer and Elle, but they couldn't. I love this series. The characters are extremely likable, even when they are doing silly things, and their struggles are familiar. The pacing of the story keeps things moving along and I devoured this in just two days. Jill Shalvis's writing just kept me turning the pages until the end.

Loved. I've been anxiously awaiting Elle and Archer's book and am happy to report that it definitely did not disappoint. The chemistry those two have been giving off in this series practically leapt off the pages--I'm not sure who was more relieved when they finally gave into it, them or me :) Though before that, watching Archer sabotage Elle's dates and then her explode at him afterwards? That was pretty satisfying too. As usual, seeing this group of friends interact is almost as much fun as watching the hero and heroine get together. Spencer must have his own book ASAP! (He does, but not until next September--Chasing Christmas Eve. Next. September.) If you haven't read the other books yet, this one could definitely work as a standalone. Though you would miss out on some of the shared experiences that the friends have gone through in the other 2.5 books that are mentioned here, it's not a major deal (though it'll probably inspire you to increase your TBR by two novels and a novella, this isn't a problem either, surely?) Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Archer and Elle have so much chemistry they could set the pages on fire! There's a long history between them. Archer's been more involved in Elle's life since they met than she's realized and we find out all about it in this book. They love, they hate, they care and don't want too. Archer comes off as a real tough guy but not when it comes to Elle. The way the whole group communicates and understands each other sometimes without words is awesome! Think this book is my favorite so far in this series! I voluntarily read an advance ecopy for an honest review.

Elle and Archer are two of my favorite characters in Jill's series. I LOVED getting to know more about the secretive Archer and the fiery Elle. The chemistry between Elle and Archer is palpable. They just obviously belonged together since the first book but I knew that watching them figure it out would be great. Jill's books always make me laugh, smile, get angry, and even shed a tear. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

I stayed up so late reading this book! I have to say, I think it's one of her best ones. I read #2 from Avon last year and when #1 was on sale, I snapped it up. I loved getting to know Elle and Archer and their spicy tension but when they sent me #3 to review... I had to read it ASAP. It was fantastic. Getting to know Elle and how she knew Archer from when she was younger was done perfectly. With the gang helping and interfering. I just loved the whole thing.

I received an advance copy in exchange for my honest review! First off, I have been a fan of Jill Shalvis for a long time! She never fails in giving me a book that I can't put down until I finish reading it! Her characters are well developed, she writes with humor. Some of the characters you long to become friends with them. This book is my favorite of the Heartbreaker Bay Series. I loved Elle & Archer. Both characters are so guarded initially, but with some trials and tribulations they got their HEA! I would recommend this book to my friends and fellow readers. This was a perfect book for a weekend I ! LOVED IT!!!!

Wow!!!! I just finished this book and I'm breathless!!! I don't know if I have the words to tell you how much I loved this story. Archer is a hero and protector bar none!!! He has spent the last eleven years watching over Elle and making sure she is safe. Elle was the girl that got to him, she had him doing things that would cost him so much but in the end she gave him everything!!! Theirs isn't an easy love story it took courage for both of them to let the other one close. They both had hearts that were surrounded by brick walls that had to be removed carefully, one brick at a time. Archer fell first and hard then he had to believe enough for both of them until he convinced her he wouldn't leave that he loved her forever and it was safe for her to love him too!!! The writing of this book was genius, it was so well written that I couldn't stop reading until I was done and now that I have posted my review I'm going to go back and read it again!!! I have fallen for this book family and I can't wait to read more!!! Well done Jill Shalvis I think you are insanely talented I am a fan for life!!

I love Archer and Elle.  If you have read any of the Heartbreaker Bay series, you are aware of the undercurrents between Archer and Elle.  We finally learn their history and it was a great story.  Archer gives Elle a safe haven.  Elle allows Archer to be himself.  Everyone can see they are perfect for each other - even while they deny it.  I don't want to rehash the story in my review, rather I would like to say that this book is a typical Jill Shalvis story.  To me a typical Jill Shalvis story means:  1).  the characters are people I like and would like to have as friends 2).  the story makes me feel good (plenty of warm and fuzzy feelings) 3).  the story has moments that make me laugh out loud 4).  a sense of satisfaction that the hero and heroine are really perfect for each other (despite their very human flaws)   This one had the extra benefit that Archer is really an appealing character.....we would all be lucky to find a guy like him! I received an ARC for an honest review.

I have been waiting for Elle and Archer's story ever since the first book in the series. They just obviously belonged together but I knew that watching them figure it out would be a lot of fun. This book lived up to my expectations and I really enjoyed watching Elle and Archer admit their feelings both to themselves and each other. Elle and Archer are very close. They have known each other for a long time and actually have a very interesting history that really explained a lot. Elle feels like she is in Archer's debt because of the events of the past. Archer does not feel like Elle has cause him any damage and has looked out for her over the years. They both have deep feelings for each other but they have never acted on them. I liked learning about Elle's past. She is such a confident and put together woman and it was interesting to learn just how different her teen years were. It really explained why she works so hard to better herself and strives to be as perfect as she can. The fact that Archer knows about her past is a fact that Elle never forgets. He doesn't hold anything against her and is in fact impressed by all that she has accomplished. I loved Elle and Archer together. The chemistry between the pair was incredibly intense. Waiting for them to actually act on their attraction to each other was intense and I was relieved when they finally kissed. The way they acted towards each other as the book progressed was fun to watch. Their romance ended up being as intense as I had expected. I would highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance. This is the third book in the Heartbreaker Bay series but it could be read as a stand alone. It was fun to hang out with the characters from the previous books again for a little while. I hope that we see a few more books in this wonderful series. I received an advance reader edition of this book from Avon Books via Edelweiss.

4.5 Stars Another great installment in the Heartbreaker Bay series. This book had the humor the I expect in a Jill Shalvis book. I just gobbled this up. I knew Archer and Elle's story was a good one and it proved be even better then anticipated. I loved the tension between Archer and Elle. They come off as not liking one another, but secretly they desired one another. They have a past. That long ago night was the turning point in Elle's life. I really liked Elle. She comes off as the no holds barred in charge woman, but she has a vulnerable side that she doesn't let anyone see. Can her past stay in the past or will it rear it's ugly head? I just love this group of friends in this series. I love getting to see the previous characters enjoying their HEAs. I can't wait for more from this series.

A sassy, sizzling battle of the wills with lots of heart. Jill Shalvis always brings a smile to my face. Having nothing but given ea chance by a rookie cop who put his job on the line for her, Elle Wheaten has spent the last decade making a life for herself. Leaving her grifter origins behind Elle is studying to get her accounting degree while working as a building manager. It may seem like a lot but she expertly balances everything with ease except her love life, that’s occupying of the offices in the building she manages. She’s tried to get Archer Hunt to notice her ever since he helped her all those years ago, but the man is an island never letting anyone in. A frustrating fact that’s pushed her to try and move on. From the moment he saw the fearless and strong Elle, he wanted her. But being six years her senior while she was a mere sixteen forced him to take care of her from afar. Now that she has her life on track though he can’t find it in him to stay away any longer. But after a decade of keeping her at arm’s length there are a few minor setbacks. He’s sabotaged a couple of her dates earning him her ire and he can’t seem to be able to convince her to take a chance on them. Even though each book in this series can be read as a standalone, I kind of wish I had read the previous ones before getting to Elle and Archer’s story. Having read this book, I can only imagine the explosive interactions between them in the past. Love-hate relationships that ooze sexual tension can’t get any better than with two difficult, wilful and clueless characters with a history that binds them. Elle is strong and independent, never a hair out of place, a woman who most men line up to have shot at. She’s smart and sassy and isn’t afraid of directing her sass towards a man who intimidates just about everyone. She’s very easy to like and I got how all her friends and Archer’s friends flocked around her. jill Shalvis creates tough on the outside heroes with a melt-your-heart inside. Archer is a deliciously brooding alpha male with a stoic façade. But he cared for Elle since he met her, he was practically obsessed with it. I enjoyed watching him realize just how much he loved her. The two of them were wonderful together. They had each other’s back no matter what they were feeling towards the other in the moment which made for a beautiful friendship. They also drove each other insane with desire, lust and sometimes just flat out craziness because of their lack of communication. They have a lot of things to work through besides their burgeoning feelings and explosive attraction. He has secrets, she feels indebted to him, and they both have fears. But throughout it all I was highly entertained and invested in them. I really enjoyed getting to know Elle and Archer’s entire group of friends. They all gave the story an added layer of charm, that made me want to get to know each and every one of them but I especially loved Spencer. Archer and Elle’s best friend who played a reluctant cupid between the two. I’m sure his story will bring a huge smile to all Jill Salvis fans including this romance lover. Accidentally On Purpose is the third book in the Heartbreaker Bay series by Jill Shalvis. It is a standalone, full-length, contemporary romance full of fun banter and super sexy bits that will bring a smile to your face. Told from both points of view, with a happy ending.
