VOYA - Lisa Martincik
Jackie Estacado is the latest inheritor of the ancient power of The Darkness, another bad man wondering about his place in the world. He is currently trying to enjoy life a little with the help of Dr. Kirchner, who is drugging the populace of the small country of Sierra Munoz with products derived from his own powers and ruling in place of the previous tyrant. As he falls for the beautiful rebel who tried to kill him, the doctor makes his move to wrest from him both his profits and The Darkness. The six issues comprising this volume serve as both a continuation of Jackie's ongoing saga, and with the help of a few flashbacks, as a handy introduction for new readers. The darkness of this particular story stems less from the protagonist's superpower-like manipulation of The Darkness than from the world in which Jackie is trapped by those powers and the even less moral, supposedly more human people surrounding him. Hester is a capable writer, no stranger to grey areas and the macabre in his other works, providing character insight along with spattered blood and a grotesque demonic birth sequence. Broussard displays the dynamism (and pouty lips) familiar to readers of this line of comics, but his underlying sense of storytelling is firm and the style works fairly well for the story. This collection includes an alternate cover gallery and some pencil breakdowns with comments from writer and artist. Reviewer: Lisa Martincik
