Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
Sharing information or ideas in front of an audience may seem frightening, but in reality, people give presentations all the time: show and tell, pep talks, formal speeches, or even simply telling people about a favorite book. Author Lisa Bullard introduces young audiences to the various types of presentations with specific, commonly experienced examples before breaking down the creation of a presentation into manageable steps. First she goes into detail about choosing a topic, stressing the importance of selecting a subject that interests both the speaker and the audience, and provides a graphic organizer for brainstorming. Prewriting and research form the basis of the next step, which is exploring the topic. Another tool, a "KWHL" chart is included, along with basic information on how to use the media center and Internet. Thirdly, speakers need to draft and revise their presentations. Once the information is polished, visual aids, such as costumes, props, posters, or slideshows with photos, videos, and sound can be added. Finally, it is time to rehearse and present. A Presentation Day Checklist will remind students of important tasks, and tips for dealing with stage fright will help calm down even the most nervous student. Bullard suggests conducting a self-review after each presentation in order to improve future performance, as well as a peer review. This book's colorful pictures, useful graphics, and informative sidebars make the daunting task of oral or multimedia presentations seem fun and exciting, and will be a useful tool in elementary school classrooms.
