Physical science is chemistry and physics and the place that they overlap. In this edition of the "Ace Your Physics Science Project" series, the authors' topics include the following: Matter: Gases, Liquids, and Solids; The Properties of Liquids, the Properties of Water; The Properties of Gases; Physical and Chemical Changes. There are hundreds of experiment books out there but this book is fairly unique in not shying away from working with gases. Gases are difficult to capture, and difficult to measure, but this book shows fairly simple techniques for measuring involving a balloon and displaced water. The experiments in the book are fun projects, but the results are discussed. For science fair projects, students would still need to work out the question that they would investigate, but the authors offer fruitful topics for investigation. For example, after learning how to measure gases with the displaced water, there is a topic area marked Science Project Ideas. These suggestions include: "Design an experiment to measure the volume of air that you normally inhale and exhale during breathing. Then find the largest amount of air that you can exhale after taking a deep breath." As with the whole series, this book will be useful for upper elementary and middle school students. Gr 4-8–These three series offer a wealth of information and differ only in the topics they include. All begin with an introduction that discusses science-fair projects and the scientific method and lists safety tips. The texts consist of five chapters of themed experiments–for example, some of those in Animal Science Project are “Clever Lab and Field Studies” and “Studying Human Behavior.” The chapters introduce the concepts and the experiments that follow demonstrate them. Many entries conclude with ideas for science-fair projects; as in the publisher’s “Score! Sports Science Projects” series, they are indicated by a trophy symbol. Each experiment includes a materials list, steps to follow, questions to consider, and diagrams that clarify the directions. When something potentially dangerous is involved, an adult is listed as the first material in the list and a reminder is included in the experiment. Worthwhile purchases.
