Overview

With detailed contributions and research from experts in the physiology of normal acid-base homeostasis and the management of acid-base disorders, this reference supplies an abundance of information on acid-base physiology, disorders of acid-base equilibrium, and the management and treatment of these disorders in clinical practice. A unique and timely source, this guide provides a large number of tables, references, and figures to illustrate the relationship between the underlying physiology and diagnosis of acid-base disorders.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Stefan G Kiessling, MD (University of Kentucky College of Medicine)
Description: This book offers an exciting, easy to read, and detailed analysis of acid-base physiology and pathophysiology. It is unique in that it includes and discusses recent advances in molecular and cellular research in each chapter giving the audience one of the most comprehensive reviews of the topic currently available.
Purpose: This is a comprehensive overview of all aspects of acid-base physiology and possible disorders. It manages quite well to correlate recent advances in molecular cell biology with basic acid-base (patho)physiology without being too basic or too complex. It allows the audience to finally get a full understanding of the complexities of acid-base physiology.
Audience: The book is written for clinicians at all levels of training who frequently deal with acid-base problems. It is especially useful for those clinicians who want to dive more into the details of acid-base pathophysiology and recent advances. Also, experts in the field of acid-base physiology might find very useful up-to-date information in this structured and complete approach to the topic. Given the accessible structure of the book, it will likely fascinate everybody who has an interest in the topic.
Features: This is a well structured combination of chapters discussing and reviewing basic principles like respiratory/metabolic acidosis and alkalosis and chapters specifically tailored to certain interests in various fields, like acid-base considerations in infants and children and special aspects of acid-base disorders in dialysis patients. Some of the chapters are more oriented towards the clinician, whereas parts of chapters or entire chapters (e.g. molecular biology of renal acid-base transporters) give insight into the advances in molecular and cell physiology and biology. Most readers will be impressed by the structure of most chapters. Even some of the most complex topics are presented in an easy to read and review style and translate physiology and pathophysiology into clinically useful information.
Assessment: This is a long-needed, comprehensive review of the broad topic of acid-base disorders that presents a synthesis of basic reviews and up-to-date clinical and molecular acid-base physiology. It advances into the complexities only after the authors make sure that the audience can follow them. It provides the molecular aspects of acid-base physiology that so many nonclinicians will have missed in Clinical Physiology of Acid-Base and Electrolyte Disorders, 5th edition, by Rose and Post (McGraw-Hill, 2001).
